Bergdahl story

Wow bro. Incredibly naive take.

This is not a Disney movie.

Well let me know when the consequences hit and then maybe i will change my tune. For now its a happy story.

Maybe the taliban executes those 5 dudes for getting caught.. maybe they blow themselves up making IED.
Maybe they decide the terrorist life is no longer for them and they get honest work.

For now it IS a happy ending

Was the guy your brother? Would you have released Josef Mengele to get him back? Because, yeah, it's kind of like that. But I don't want to bore you with "Drama."

Then stop being overly dramatic. Simple.

No idea who Josef Mengele is off the top of my head. I can give you the same question. Are these Afghans your family? What is your desire to protect them? At what cost? What makes them better than others we are not protecting? At what point is enough enough?

If you are so strongly for protecting the innocent then are you advocating going into Africa? China? Ukraine? Libya? Egypt? Palestine?

Basically I am glad we got him back. I would like to know what other viable options they had v. what they did before I freak out about this. Do I care about these 5 guys? Nope. I care about Bergdahl and his family (mostly the family) more than some hypothetical Afghanistan family that might hypothetically be hurt as a result of this.

Having said that if a covert rescue option was available that would probably have been my prefered choice of getting him back.

Everyone negotiates with terrorists. Even the turncoat/Red Jesus Ronald Reagan negotiated with terrorists.

Its dumb to stick with policies just for policy sake anyway. You should always look at each situation on its own.

What if terrorists had an atomic bomb and they said they were going to drop it in new york city..... unless we give them a ham sandwich.

Should the president be like "sorry, we dont negotiate with terrorists. We will not surrender a ham sandwich, go ahead and drop your bomb."?

Each scenario should be looked at independently. It shouldnt be as cut and dry as We Dont Negotiate With Terrorists.

Fwiw i have no idea if what the government did in this situation was the right or wrong thing to do but im hapoy for the dude and his loved ones that he is no longer a hostage.

It must have been terrible to not know what was happening to him all this time.

Unless you or your family in Afghanistan is on the enemy list of the five dudes that just got released. Then you are in a world of hurt.

Why is your position any worse now than last week? IF these are senior commanders, wouldn't their juniors have already been intent on revenge?

How about evidence instead of drama? What crimes were these men convicted of? What evidence do you have?

That line of thinking is terrible bro. You take the information you have and make the best decision you can.

Releasing terrorists and saying "hey maybe they won't do anything bad anyways lol"

is like saying...

"I'm gonna eat donuts for dinner every night and maybe I wont get fat. It makes me happy now, and hey, ya neeeeever know!"

Um, actually yeah, you do know.

This right here is my point. (I already said in another post that i dont presume to know if the government did the right thing or not. I am simply happy for the dude and his loved ones)

My point is that saying "We dont negotiate with terrorists" is dumb.

Instead it should be just like you said " You take the information you have and make the best decision you can."

We are in agreement good sir

To open another vein of topic here...then what should we do with them and other Gitmo detainees? Just hold and pay for their holding for ever? Kill them off? Release them?

Also we are leaving Afghanistan anyways (leaving just under 10k troops) so what will that do to all the Afghan people that went agaisnt the Taliban? We are already putting them in harms way by leaving. 5 more guys in this scenario does nothing to change that scenario.

all i gotta say is WAR? what is it good for? ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING.

atleast the wars america seem to be fighting.

bringing democracy to people who did not ask for it.

If a member of my family was killed looking for this jack-hole who wandered off of base I would be a little more than pissed at this. Also, Obama just painted a nice big target on the back of every American. Now that we have traded for one, why won't we trade for more?

Good point.

Should have let the soldier rot?

He also killed the economy, destroyed healthcare, single handedly shut down the government, and owns the soul of every firstborn son born during his tenure.
