Donation ethical question

I have friends on Facebook that ask for donations so they can travel the world and make a difference in poor people's lives. Smh.

I have a mission companion who begs on Facebook for loans so he can pay his bills. But then is also showing pictures of him partying.....

I've experienced this as well. Some cycling buddies setting up some fundraiser so they can do a bike tour from Portland to LA or something similar.

Im sure he has a smart phone with the most minutes and the biggest data package. Its scandalous.

Which is when families are setting up online donation accounts to cover funeral costs.

In this case it wasn't the family themselves who set up the donation account.

It was set up by friends of the family to show their love and allow others to DO something to help out besides send flowers.

This is actually a way communities should help each other out.

Good point

It does not say that it was setup by friends and family. But even so that still doesn't change the point of the thread.

People asking for donations/charity for people that don't need it.

Several of the news stories say the donation was set up by friends of the family.

Directly from dailymail story: "A family friend has set up a fundraising page to help raise money to cover funeral costs"

They are also collecting blankets to give to charity in honor of the little boy who loved blankets.

I'm curious to know what the family can legally do with the donated money. Does it have to be used only for funeral expenses or can they give the excess away?
Are the donations considered a gift? How do the taxes work on that?

Great question. I'd guess there are no legal stipulations saying the money has to be used for anything specific. Tax wise they ARE considered a donation on the giving end and here's some information on the receiving end:

I think it is extremely dumb how much people spend to essentially place a corpse into some dirt.

I have told everyone in my family and my wife that when i die i want them to spend as little money possible.

Preferably they throw my body in a dumpster and be done with it.

Its hard enough for the living to get over the grief and whatnot without having to come up with thousands of dollars for a funeral.

I dont want to be a burden on my loved ones when im dead

Preach on, sir. I've given my wife the same instructions, to which she replies, "You better outlive me then".

Most doctors, at least newer ones are in a ton of med school debt.

You know the thread is doomed when Archie Moses is the voice of reason.

In case you had any doubts about your thread being the dumbest thing in the creation of the webz, PW steps up with the second brightest post of the thread.

In short, Downs, you're a complete moron. (as if anyone needed any further clarification) Maybe we should put 100 doctors on an island and see if evolution can take care of their bills. Seriously.

The donations would NOT be tax deductible if the family has not set up a tax exempt entity to receive the donations through the IRS. With most of these sorts of things, the "donations" are really just gifts. I'm not sure what legal limits there are to how the family uses the money.

This doesn't surprised me. At all.

Def agree with FOJ and Balloun.

I want to be cremated and my ashes used to help fertilize a newly planted tree in the Angeles Forest.
