What's new

Quin Snyder is the new coach

This all seems very anti-climactic. Is it really a meh choice or does it just feel like a meh choice?

Okay I'll bite. What is this based on?

he's not a boss

there's a difference between just a hard working/nice coach and a coach that will win you something

all i see in snyder is a great assistant, yet another journeyman head coach

That's not a reason lol. What is this based on. I ask for a reason and you show me a picture of a coach. What is that supposed to mean?

Reasons I like him.

He's been a head coach and had success.

He's been under amazing coaches for years (was an associate head coach under coach K, one of the best coaches ever, worked with Pop, one of the best and Doug Collins, who said Snyder is one of the best basketball minds he's ever known)

He's been a D league head coach

He's got an MBA and a JD from Duke

He has published analysis of the pick and roll which is very interesting.

Players love him

He comes off as very intelligent and appears to command a room and respect.

All of these things tell me that he has experience at the helm, he has the respect of some of the best basketball people out there, he has the respect and admiration of players, he is intelligent in both basketball and non basketball areas and he is always looking to improve.

Now, I've given some reasons I like him and expect success.

You say "he's not a boss." How did you decide that. What is your dislike based on. Just want to give you a chance to give actual reasons for your conclusion before I give up.

nice resume of snyder

now compare his resume with the resumes of other 29 coaches, i bet he will end up in the bottom 10 as a candidate (if that's your arguments)

i personally don't want to prove here something or to somebody, i just have my vision and usually i'm not mistaken :)

I'm wrong all the time (just ask my wife - she'll tell you.)

I wanted Ettore Messina. I thought that his experience would be a great fit for Utah.

They went with a guy that is a very DL type of hire. Smart, analytical, has a really good understanding of the game, has a reputation as being a good player development coach and comes strait from that Spurs coaching tree. I'm fine with Quin Snyder. Much more so than I was the week leading up to the decision. He's a smart guy, and a guy who looks like he can take that next step and be a quality NBA head coach.

He still needs to fill out his bench. It's my personal philosophy that you should always get the best people that you can to help assist you. Pay a premium price for premium quality. So much is in Estes in players, but not in coaches.

Until he officially signs with someone else, I'd still pursue Messina. I'd also give Shaka Smart a call as well. Both of those guys would be great hires.

Snyder... Who knows if he is a good hire or not...

What we do know is he is an out of the box hire for the Jazz...

And after the "Jack in the Box" we had for the past 3+ years, I'm really happy to have Snyder and he looks as though he Could be good!!!!

So your conclusion is baseless. That's all I needed to know. Thanks!

Edit: not trying to be a jerk, I just wanted to know if your dislike was based on something or just a personal hunch.

He's the anti-Corbin.

Smart to a fault.
Analytical about everything.
Loves the pick & roll - and recognizes the importance of P&R defense.
Likes to develop young guys.
Dresses like - well. . . we won't compare the two.
Fiery and has an angry side.
Definitely a DL guy - not a Millers guy!

If anything, the hiring of Quin Snyder proves that the Millers have bought in to letting DL build this team in his vision.

Shaka as an assistant? That would be too awesome.

Another great point about this being DL team. The Millers deserve credit. They hired DL and are trusting him to do his job and staying out of the way.

Sure. I'll bet you had the Van Gundys, Messina and Hollins at the top of your list. Who's to say the Jazz didn't contact every one of those guys and there was simply no interest? Many great coaches have come through the same type of lineage as Snyder - i.e. successful at college and/or D-League and then very well-regarded assistants. Budenholzer and Joerger fit that description. You probably would have been against the hiring of Popovich by SA. He had experience as a HC at mighty Pomona-Pitzer and then a couple of jobs as an assistant before leaving coaching briefly to be the Spurs GM, then naming himself the head coach.

i was one of the first against corbin (when a lot of dudes here claimed that he needs time etc)

and i was first that wrote the name "david blatt" on this board

but hey, nice try ) anyway, i trust my vision no matter what

I agree. The idea that we hired someone who has no connection to the jazz is huge. Especially for a franchise that has been so conservative in its approach to coaches.

I just want to point out if you proclaim any player or any coach will fail guess what, you'll be right way more often then you'll be wrong.

Every other coach in the NBA besides Quin Snyder will fail. The rebuild is on full steam ahead. It'll be fun to see where they are three years from now.
