Houston is looking to clear cap space in hopes of signing Lebron or Melo. Lin is on an expiring deal where he gets paid $15m next season (but only $8.5m against the cap). Utah gets a strong back-up PG, who could also start or play alongside Burke. He also has the ability to go off at any time and be the bench scorer that the Jazz need. With Jefferson and Biedrens off the books, Utah will have the cap space and in this case they are getting a valuable, still young player in Lin (rather than old vets).

A trade that makes sense for both camps:

Houston trades Lin + Cash (to cover some of the balloon payment) + #25 (or future protected first)

Utah trades John Lucas III (Rockets likely waive non-guaranteed deal) + #35 (or future 2nd)
 
No, you do not help Houston because one more superstar does push them over the top and freeing up Lins money might get them that. Let them languish as 2nd round exits for the next several years.
 
I'd only do this trade if we can package Chandler Parsons in the deal along with future unprotected 1st round picks.
 
I love Lin and I would be thrilled to add him. Straight up, he's better than Burke. And in the dream scenario, we trade Burke for something good and Lin becomes our starting point.

There's no way that they're going to pay that much to get rid of him. And they will get rid of him. Someone will take that contract on for some sort of quality asset. The Jazz only got two 1st round picks for a $24 million cash dump - yes they were unprotected, but the Warriors are likely a playoff team for the next several years. For me, I'd take both Asik and Lin if they kick in the 25th pick as well. Bite the bullet on their contracts for the year and either flip Asik at the deadline or look at extending them both at a more reasonable rate down the road.

You do the deal to give you another bargaining chip to move around in this incredibly deep draft. How far do 23 and 25 move you up this year? If they're willing to do the deal before the draft, I'd pull the trigger and then try to package the two picks to move up for someone like Adrian Payne, Zach LaVine or even Joel Embiid depending on how far he falls. I'm sure that everyone would like to get more out of them, but it's better to strike when you can get something worthwhile. The Jazz are going to need to trade or sign someone to get up to the minimum salary level. This way, they can get an asset out of it at a time that it could actually be valuable.

There's no telling how free agency will go. They might be able to find a deal similar to that, but there's no guarantees. If you're going to commit to the youth movement, then this is a good move.

Considering that the San Antonio Spurs TEAM just beat the crap out of the Miami Heat's BIG THREE, I'm not sure that model of franchise building is all that it's being claimed to be. I think that LeBron James is the biggest factor in the Heat's extended success (along with playing in the craptastic East) and I'm not nearly as worried about the Rockets as you are I guess. I think that Dwight Howard is a talented coach-killer. He still has a bad back and Harden still doesn't play defense. Their team will be all about their big three and unless they lure LeBron James to Houston (I tried to type that with a strait face, but couldn't) then they're never going to go anywhere anyways.

I don't think it holds much water. Duncan, Ginobli, Parker have slowed down, but have partially made up for it with the chemistry of playing together for 10+ years. The superstar team of Howard, Harden, and Melo would annihilate us for many years. Woe to the GM who makes the blunder of taking on Lin or Asik.
 
What about Lin and Asik, especially if we trade Favors and #5. Could even pry some unprotected draft picks eh?

I agree. Lin can play and his deal isn't THAT big (like Jefferson + Biedrins + Rush big), but the Jazz would still deserve more compensation. While they would get another first, effectively it's only moving up 10 spots (because they'd give up the #35).
 
I wouldn't give up #35 to do it. I'd make the deal because I want as many assets to maneuver with in this draft. Lin's cap hit isn't as bad as his salary. That's where a small market team takes a hit. If the Rickets want to unload Lin and Asik to try to maneuver another max contract, they will do it with or without the Jazz. You make the deal because it helps you moving forward. Can't get hung up on what Houston might do or might accomplish. Lin is a good fit for Quin Snyder and I'd be very interested in seeing him in a P&R offense again. The extra pick back and either Motiejunas or Jones would be two nice assets added for NOTHING. Those are the types of deals that the Jazz should always be looking to make.

Utah isn't going to be championship caliber competitive for at least another 3 years. Houston's window with a 30+ melo would be about 3 years. Timing works out great. I still have a hard time believing that stat-loving Mowry would want low efficiency stat-stuffing Melo, unless her already has a plan to make Melo more efficient and effective
