It is still a heart-breaking tie for the US. If they had held on for another 30 seconds they would have already locked up a spot in the next round.

Sorry, but that part is just not interesting. Won't ever be for me. I've had similar lectures on the strategy elements of NASCAR before. I played lots of soccer growing up, but thankfully they ended in shootouts if we tied. No ties in any sport or game. It's non negotiable. Save us the 90 minutes if you're going to tie. It's not a being tough guy thing, it's an entertainment thing. I'm rooting for the US, but I want them go down early every game so they stay on the attack and keep it entertaining. Today's was much better because they couldn't pack it in for most of the match.

maybe just GTFO bro.

I went to the first game that real salt lake ever played in rio tinto stadium. I was really excited and had bought great seats.

Final score: 1-1

I left the stadium not knowing if i should be happy or upset or what. Quite a strange feeling and kind of a let down. I didnt enjoy the game ending in a tie.

Maybe i just dont understand soccer like ugli said, but thats my two cents

Sooo this puts the USA in a surreal spot...

Americans love game 7's and the game on Thursday is technically that. There is going to be copious amounts of media coverage hyping this game beyond comprehension!!!

If the USA tie or lose against Germany and still advance they have already surpassed expectations by getting out of the "group of death" and cementing themselves as a threat in the soccer/fûtbol world!!

If the USA beats Germany and takes the top seed in "the group of death" they secure themselves as bonafide "Soccer Nation"!!!

this game against portugal must had 8-9 rating. i think first game did like 7. it's absolutely huge because these games are social events - many are watching in sports bars.

I'm going to be watching the US-Germany game from a huge outdoor video stadium in Berlin. Will post pics.

The Ronaldo cross will haunt my dreams if we don't make it out if the group. It was literally more accurate than a Peyton Manning football throw. ****ing beautiful.

Love how into soccer UGLI is. Not liking Dala as much now tho....

Man, but what a first half onslaught by Algeria.... How the **** Russians could not beat that Korean team? They looked pathetic, could not even produce one shot on goal in first half. Granted they scored 2 in second half and made score more respectable but still....I would be not surprised if Algeria beats Russia as well, their attack and passing looked very good today.

Yup. Hate him, but that cross was a Bernini sculpture.

Yup.

I dont mean this as an insult, but you just don't really understand the sport.

Playing for a tie is a legitimate strategy, not just some by product of two teams trying to win and they end up tying. Teams can play for a tie in many ways, and is actually one of the cooler elements of soccer.

I think of a Penalty shootout as a necessary evil in elimination games. The game has to end at some point, but how lame would it be to end a football game on a "field goal kick challenge!!!" ?

If you stop looking at soccer through the lens of other sports you are more familiar with, you will enjoy it more. It's kind of a tough guy thing to say, "Grrr no game should end in tie! We real men! Real men have winner and no tie!" but it shows that you do not understand the sport at its core.

Again, it is much, much different than a Hockey game ending in a tie (back when that was a thing), a team playing for a tie while another team is playing for a win is one of the nuances that makes Soccer the sport that it is.

Maybe your most solid post ever.

Draws in a tournament setting are way, way different than a regular season game. Like this 2-2 draw, and Ghana's 2-2 draw against Germany were probably two of the most exciting games of the tournament.

If we tie or beat Germany, we're in.

If Ghana and Portugal draw we're in.

If Portugal wins they need to make up a 5 goal diiferential on us.

If Ghana wins, they need to make up a 2 goal differential on us, while also scoring 2 more total goals then us, or make up a 3 goal differential.

Basically, USA needs to root for Portugal and also try and keep the Germany game to a 1 goal loss or better in case Ghana wins.

Fixed a little part I had wrong.

So if USA loses 1-0 and Ghana wins 2-1, Ghana advances.

blaaaaahhhhhhh that seems like the most likely outcome tbh.

USA really needs to score a goal and lose by no more than 1.

Klinnsman and his German bros gonna have a little chat before the game. Germany and U.S. Both gonna play nine defenders and never attack past midfield. 0-0 tie, both advance. Belgium becomes our bitches.

lololol Eden Hazard will absolutely gut the American defense. Y'all stand zero chance. He will absolutely wreak havoc.
