So from what I'm reading, America's basically in the next round anyway now right? They would need to take a royal beating. Excepting that, they are in.

They need a win or a tie. Against Germany, that won't be easy.

There's a goal differential mixed in there too. Then total goals. Then head-to-head. I don't know actually, I'm learning on the go myself, but that's what it looked like on my quick read up.

No.

Shootouts are maybe the worst thing in all of sports.

Anything is better than a tie. They could pin the whole outcome of the game on a rock, paper, scissors duel for all I care, and it would still be better than a tie. I'd rather see a game rained out than end up in a tie. But the shootout is the kind of scenario you get when it's not easy to score in your sport. But I guess it's only good enough for elimination games.

If we tie or beat Germany, we're in.

If Ghana and Portugal draw we're in.

If Portugal wins they need to make up a 5 goal diiferential on us.

If Ghana wins, they need to make up a 2 goal differential on us, while also scoring 3 more total goals then us, or make up a 3 goal differential.

Basically, USA needs to root for Portugal and also try and keep the Germany game to a 1 goal loss or better in case Ghana wins.

I dont mean this as an insult, but you just don't really understand the sport.

Playing for a tie is a legitimate strategy, not just some by product of two teams trying to win and they end up tying. Teams can play for a tie in many ways, and is actually one of the cooler elements of soccer.

I think of a Penalty shootout as a necessary evil in elimination games. The game has to end at some point, but how lame would it be to end a football game on a "field goal kick challenge!!!" ?

If you stop looking at soccer through the lens of other sports you are more familiar with, you will enjoy it more. It's kind of a tough guy thing to say, "Grrr no game should end in tie! We real men! Real men have winner and no tie!" but it shows that you do not understand the sport at its core.

Again, it is much, much different than a Hockey game ending in a tie (back when that was a thing), a team playing for a tie while another team is playing for a win is one of the nuances that makes Soccer the sport that it is.

Sorry, but that part is just not interesting. Won't ever be for me. I've had similar lectures on the strategy elements of NASCAR before. I played lots of soccer growing up, but thankfully they ended in shootouts if we tied. No ties in any sport or game. It's non negotiable. Save us the 90 minutes if you're going to tie. It's not a being tough guy thing, it's an entertainment thing. I'm rooting for the US, but I want them go down early every game so they stay on the attack and keep it entertaining. Today's was much better because they couldn't pack it in for most of the match.

No one actually cares about soccer in the United States. The ones that actually do are insignificant. Hell, there's more genuine fans of that idiotic fringe sport of MMA (UFC) than soccer in the USA. And MMA is the laughing stock of the sports world. Any American that's not a genuine soccer fan (so about 99.99%) couldn't tell you which teams can win the World Cup with any actual credence. Whether they cheer for the phoniest reason on earth (civic pride), or because they just want to fit in with the rest of the mindless idiots of society who are just doing what the corporations tell them is the trendy thing to do, doesn't matter. So in other words, this is a completely useless thread and probably would've been better served as a thread finding out who our favorite porn stars are.

Thanks for stereotyping 300 + million people. Why are you even here if you don't like the world cup. There are plenty of Americans in Rio and here at home cheering on the USA. There is 6 billion + people worldwide who don't give a crap about american football but that doesn't change the excitement for americans so the rest of the world could careless what you or people like you think about their sport. Yes, If we could only be as smart as you.

I am a sports fan and I am open to all sports. I became a soccer/futbol fan when I saw the passion of others regarding the sport. After watching US vs Portugal today, it was just as exciting and disappointing as any other sport I've watched.

It is still a heart-breaking tie for the US. If they had held on for another 30 seconds they would have already locked up a spot in the next round.
