With the Fifth Pick... Dante Exum

It's possible that he wasn't extremely thrilled about us taking him when compared to going in the top 3. At least he had the decency to act professional about the whole thing and even act excited. Pretty intelligent on his part if that's the case. LaVine just started off really well with Minny fans...

I liked something he said, "If I'd been picked 1, or 30, I'd still be excited..." something like that.

Sums it up pretty well. It's as exciting as choosing broccoli over french fries because it's the right choice. We just added another question mark to a team full of question marks. Are we going to be the next Cleveland, minus the back to back #1's? Back to back #5's or something? Or a 3-peat?

I think we were in a position(draft order wise) where we were surrounded by players with question marks regardless. One of the other possibilities was taken out of our hands when Orlando shocked everyone and took Gordon. Overall, I am happy we shot for the moon on this one and had a chance at Exum. At least we can say we had the balls to take a possible AS rather than taking the safe route that guaranteed continued mediocrity. It might end up blowing up in our face, but we made the bold pick IMO and there's something to be said for that.

He seems like an intelligent and good kid. I just hope many fans don't put unrealistic expectations on him from day one. It's going to take him some time to develop.

As one of the few existing Aussie jazz supporters, can I warn u all that there will be a huge influx of Aussies now in this site. That's the way we Aussies work.

Can I just say that it is a given with exum that he will have a high bball iq, his ego will be controllable, and he will be desperate to win. You won't have the attitude issues that might tend to affect American athletes more regularly. He will be down to earth and a hard worker.

Looking forward to seeing him contribute.

I think there are a few existing Aussies here, but you are right, there will be a ****load on the bus to join up

My guess is that Gordon's athleticism, great work ethic, and great motor just won them over. Exum in their eyes was probably more of a risk comparatively. Gordon will be a good player at the NBA level, right? The sky is the limit if the shot drastically improves as well. I think he's in their view the safer pick with a higher floor and possibly just as high of a ceiling. That's why I believe they took him over Exum.

Another way to look at it is ORL wants to get better straight away (their owner is pretty old and ailing from memory).

So it's better for them to go with a PG with their #12 and grab a SF with their #4. There isn't really a quality SF within the #12 range.... so this was probably their best route.

yeah there will be

Patty Mills success in the NBA finals was a big boost for Aussie basketball

Exum will keep that ball rolling and then some

UCLA has a kid incoming next year, Jonah Bolden(#32) who might have NBA talent, Eric Bossi of rivals says hes got some Batum to his game and can run jump and shoot it from deep. In the 2016 draft there's arguably the top player Ben Simmons, a very polished PF.

The Aussie invasion is sure to continue.

That type of thinking was the reason why Portland took Sam Bowie over MJ. Most teams take the best player available regardless of the position. Need comes into play if the players are essentially equal.

Yep, THIS. You go with need, when you can't decide between 2 players and one of one players strength is not "filling a position of need"

I'd rather watch the Zach LaVine reaction to getting drafted by the Wolves.

Imagine the Jazz trade down for LaVine.

"**** me.....I hate mountains"

"and snow"

Zach LaVine has been an immature douche the entire draft process and his BBIQ and shot selection just go hand in hand with that.
There's a pretty big chance that he'll stuff stat sheets while making a team worse as a whole.

Also I want to express how happy I am with Orlando picking Erin Gordon, letting Dante Exum fall to us.

I hope I am wrong, but this guy isn't better than alec burks.

maybe better option than Burke...but I hope to god he doesn't start over alec...

Sorry but if you like Alec Burks one go to move with two exit options going for a side pick and roll and either trapping himself in the triangle and shooting a semi contested mid range shot or driving mid and doing a spinning layup better than Dante Exum's variety of crossovers, then maybe you should watch the WNBA.

Exum's crossover is really deadly, his in and out dribblings combined with a body fake will be a signature move very soon.
Makes him really special in the pick and roll, when you really don't know what to expect of him.
