What's new

Mixed Martial Arts / UFC

We Judoka have a saying, we don't hit our opponents but use the earth to hit them.

Hmmm. I like this.

It reminds me of a not often used saying in the cycling world when talking about the efficacy of wearing helmets. It goes, "When you fall off your bike and your head hits the ground, the whole world is hitting your head."

of course it does.
I am just too busy to substantiate my position in detail but let's talk about judo/ BJJ a little.
They are rich in curriculum and as sports don't have risks entailed in MMA.
What causes this difference is the rule-set.
MMA competitions are just too risky and too violent.
MMA as a hobbyist would be great for self defence but competition requires another level of commitment and courage.
I don't have it.
I got stitches doing judo, got injured in my ankle (after a violent throw)
That said, these are nothing in comparison to the risks caused or to be caused by MMA fights.
For fitness grappling is more than enough.
For fighting (self defence i.e.), BJJ or Judo each could be a nice solution. I recommend Judo here, for firstly one gets to train throws while standing (tachi waza), which is great and darn effective.

Muay Thai also is great.
Not widely known but I'd recommend Wushu Sanda (Cung Le's sport).
Just don't fight MMA.
train it? Fine. instant fitness and self-defence upgrade surely.
But competition is, for my taste and job, way too risky.

I've watched thousands of rounds of MMA. I've participated in two grappling events (Grapplers Quest in Las Vegas). I have seen more injuries in just four days of competition than in all of my MMA watching combined. Getting knocked out sucks, but five minutes later you're fine. Getting caught in a vicious heel hook will sideline you for a year or more, however.

I get what you're saying, but your John McCain approach to MMA is downright Beantown.

Well, you're obviously speaking from a position of authority.

Well, ya, actually. In two full days of competition I saw dozens of injuries, most were blown knees and elbows. I appreciate his experience with Judo, etc., but we disagree on the BJJ/MMA aspect.

I freaking love me some Ace Franklin. That speech was fantastic. I got to meet Rich at Best Buy (seriously) a few years ago. He's just as cool in person as he seems to be on TV; was pleased as purple piss to shake his hand.

seriously bro's
it was a sad day.
anybody see the bj penn - edgar fight.

omg i wanted that fight to be over.

heck i could have done better then what bj did. if i could drop down and survive the weight cut.

only way he survived till first round, is frankie was thinking wtf is going on. with his strange stance and stuff.
only way he survived 2nd round cus fraakie respected him and was waiting for bj to get "serious"

it was a travesty

Did anyone watch that Rousey fight? Lol, she destroyed Alexis Davis.

I did a five fight parlay, but left that fight off because of the odds. I think Ugly was +1600? Ridiculous. I did put $10.00 on Davis just because... Oh well. I won my parlay though, woo woo.

i was not impressed.
as judoka and boxer, it is like a blakc belt going against a noob.
people say she got knocked out be the knee or punch before the throw.
i say she got knocked out by the throw.

cus lets face it if alexis davis was any competition the punches in the side control judo hold on the ground where nothing.
there is a reason why it never worked with men.

just think wmma for now is just a freakshow.

is like ufc1.

Penn was embarrassed and outclassed completely.
There was a time that penn was one of my favorites..... he needs to retire though. Edgar was just toying with him and seemed to feel bad for him while the fight was going on.

Penns stance and style in that fight was so weird.
You coukd kinda tell penn had lost it when watching him coach the tv show. He seemed like he was missing too many brain cells and all of the guys in the finale were edgars guys.

Ronda rousey is a badass and i kinda want to **** the **** out of her.

Yes im ashamed
