All-Time NBA Draft (not just international)

I'm not sure the team building around Russell has ever made it out of the first round.

For every person who thinks "OMG Russell so bawse! Championships guys!" you'll find someone else (or two) who is like "Umm he played against a bunch of scrubs (and still never even averaged 19ppg) and is a center that weighs less than Gordon Hayward".

You can debate how good he would actually fair against guys like Hakeem, Shaq, Kareem, etc.... and that's exactly the problem. The fact that it's even a question. It's a doubt in many people's minds--the minds of the people who are voting to determine the winner. Where as with the other centers I've mentioned, there is no debate. They would dominate any era of basketball. Period.

There's a reason Russell never gets drafted especially high in this thing. He didn't "fall" this year. In fact, he was drafted higher this year than he was last year, and is the first time over the past three years that he's been taken before Shaq (Hack once took Shaq 2nd overall and won the whole the thing with him).

I think Russell deserves to be on the Mt Rushmore of basketball, no question. But in terms of how he would do against the Centers of the 90's is another story. It's up for debate, and is precisely the reason why no one ever takes him high in these drafts.

Whether the doubts are warranted or not, there are doubts there.

russell did go against wilt (and owned him) and i think wilt is comparible to hakeem, shaq, kareem

Russell is the best defensive player of all time probably. I do think he might have a tough time against shaq though. Russell would straight shut tim duncan down and he would hold his own against hakeem and abdul jabbar.

Shaq is the kind of dude that no one can really match up with tbh. But then again, just foul the crap out of him.... then at least you can hold him to 25- 30 pts instead of 40-50 that he would score each game if he could make his free throws.

edit: I think lebron is in that category (with shaq) of dudes that you really cant match up against because they are physically freaks of nature

Great pick. Simply dominant in his era. Love the combination of Jordan and Robinson.

Yeap. If you want some fighting goin' on within the starting five.

. “Let me tell you about what being great is. Ever hear of Elgin Baylor? Never mention his name, do we? Great basketball player. You know what you have today? Michael Jordan was a great player, but he won after Chicago got Pippen, Grant and those other players to go along with him, because for a while they couldn’t beat Detroit.

“Everybody looks at what you’ve done. Sure he won six championships, Russell won eleven. There are other players on these teams when they play. They don’t play by themselves. Michael Jordan is a great player. Was he the greatest? Ask Kobe that. Ask Bill Russell. Ask Oscar Robertson. Ask Wilt Chamberlain. Ask Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, ask those guys.”

LeBron is awesome, MJ was awesome—but I think Oscar Robertson would have kicked them both in the behind Absolutely. Oscar was awesome. He had brains. [...] He had all the skills.
He could rebound and box out guys four and six inches taller than him. He was ruggedly built. He had fluid, quickness and just understood the game. No flair, he just got the job done every night. Who’s going to average double figures in points, assists and rebounds?

May I ask if it is possible to trade assets once the picks are made? Like trading Oscar to Magic?

No one is comparable to Hakeem! Not even Russell would've stopped him thanks to Hakeem's footwork and array of post moves

Yes, we can trade guys we've already drafted.

Wilt and anyone else I draft are certainly attainable if someone wants any of them.

Oscar Robinson was the Barry Sanders of basketball. No nonsense. No help. Just strait up spectacular in his own right. I don't think it's hard to play with guys like that. Sure as hell hard to play without them once they're gone though.

Still have a couple of names that I'd have picked instead, but great pick nonetheless.

You lost me.

When you have NBA All time greats to pick from and you have players like Wilt, Bill, Oscar, Dr J, Big E, Moses, Dominique etc in your hands, you kinda drool all the way through the draft, thinking of the idea that you could get one of'em alongside your pick.

Oh man. Wilt Chamberlain and Shaq are playing side by side, protected by (as if they needed) Oscar, Magic and Dr J.

With the 12th pick in the draft, Jeffrey32 selects:
"The Logo"/ "Mr. Clutch" - Jerry West
West ended his playing career with 14 All-Star, 12 All-NBA Team and five All-Defensive Team selections, and scored 25,192 points, 6,238 assists and 5,366 rebounds in 932 games, translating to an average of 27.0 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. Among retired players, only Michael Jordan, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain surpass his 27.0 points per game average. He led the Lakers in scoring in seven seasons, only Jordan had a higher career scoring average in the playoffs (33.5 versus 29.1). In 1979, West was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Lakers retired his #44 jersey in 1983.West was an all-around combo guard who could take the playmaking roles of a point guard and score like a shooting guard, while being equally strong on offense and on defense. At 6'2", I will probably play him as my starting PG in today's game. In March 2008, ESPN voted West the third greatest shooting guard of all time. While only winning one NBA title as a player, he proved to be one of the greatest basketball minds of All-Time winning 7 titles as a GM (and currently turning GSW into a respectable and winning team for the first time in history).

Whatever you think of Russell, the point is that people are very split on how he would do against the centers of the 80s and 90s (and early 2000s). And in a draft that's being determined by the voting public, that's all that matters.

Russell simply isn't a top pick in this thing. It's proven year after year. Even if I personally thought he was the GOAT, I still wouldn't touch him at the top of the draft.

With the 13th pick in the draft, Jeffrey 32 selects:
"The Black Mamba"/ Kobe Bryant
As close as it gets to MJ. Five NBA championships! Bryant is a 16-time All-Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, and 12-time member of the All-Defensive team. He ranks third and fourth on the league's all-time postseason scoring and all-time regular season scoring lists, respectively. At 34 years and 104 days of age, Bryant became the youngest player in league history to reach 30,000 career points. He is also the all-time leading scorer in Lakers franchise history, which is insane given Kareem. Since his second year in the league, Bryant has been selected to start every All-Star Game. He is one of the most cold-blooded and clutch players ever. Popularity-wise he is also bullet-proof, earning the #1 vote-getter in last year's all-star game even though he only played a few games. With West as my starting PG, Bryant rounds out an amazing starting, high scoring, and defensively balanced backcourt.
