What's new

I really hate ice bucket challenge

OK, just admit you did the Ice Bucket Challenge and put a fagoty little video of it on your Facebook page for all your online friends to see. I'm not trying to make you feel defensive about it, I don't care. And BTW you don't know a thing about me - I do volunteer work, my wife does a ****-ton of volunteer work and being I support her I'm gonna go ahead and take some credit for that as well.

Lol. I like this post.

Here are some stats that show how asinine this has got.

5600 new us ALS cases a year.

1.2 million cases of cancer a year

Donations to cancer and aids causes have all but dried up over the past few months

42 + million dollars have been raised for ALS over the same span.

Not trying to discount those who suffer from this disease, but there are diseases that are closer to being solved and affecting far more people such as cancer that have been completely neglected in the name of ice water an attention whoring.

Billions have been put into AIDS and Cancer, and I don't believe that all funding has dried up over the past few months. You ARE discounting those who have the disease. They have no treatments. Cancer has treatments, AIDS has treatments (and is almost 100% preventable, by the way) go ahead and let those suffering from ALS have their 15 minutes of awareness without harshing them. Quite frankly the marketing was brilliant and accomplished exactly what it was meant to do, and somebody complaining over a bucket of water needs to find one and soak their head in it. Because this:

Ha, got "challenged" but I didn't do it. I actually wouldn't want to be part of supporting the cause (for different reasons than most think) it's just that the only thing more annoying than everybody and their mom posting a water challenge vid, is everybody and their grandmom deciding that they are the charity police and need to inform everyone of why this cause is not worthy.

PS: You mad bro??

5600........1.2m.

It has dried up. You think that just because of this challenge people will decide that this year they will go deeper into their pockets to the tune 10's of millions? No. Charitable donations are not infinite.

I am not playing charity police and do agree with UGLI it's no ones business as to where one decides to donate. However, i do believe this challenge is stupid. Not the act of donating, but the act of the challenge. I don't believe that a large number of people who do it are donating or have any idea of what ALS even is. I hate the videos and they have just gotten worse with people dressing in costumes or so e other gimmick to try and stand out.

When I donate, I make it meaningful and I keep it private. It is my business and I don't need a pat on the back or a "like" to make me feel like I did the right thing.

Biggest problem with the ice bucket challenge........ Not enough hot chicks in white t-shirts doing it

Agreed.

I don't think he claims that though. I too think that it's just not a nice thing to waste clean water while there are countless people dying in need of it.

The real question is, who's gonna help you!
Agree with this post. I am on the board of a local charity here in SLC, and I can say that the past two months have resulted in about half the donations of previous years... fact is that our take home pay is budgeted for other things than charity donations. There's only x number of dollars people are willing to donate.

Yes, I believe that charity is not a zero sum game. Do you have anything definitive that you can show me that says it is? I would guess that much of the donations received are from people not used to donating to medical research, so unless you think that new money should be appropriated and sent somewhere else. . . As far as being mad about the meme, it is viral network marketing! That is how it works! A lot of the people passing the message don't get it, just like half of the Oregon football team doesn't understand why they are wearing pink helmets. It doesn't matter. Making the initials ALS trend is part of the purpose along with raising money. How many more people know about the disease now than they did last year. I would guess that awareness has risen dramatically.

How about instead of wasting water, we start waxing body parts for als.

How about they light themselves on fire like the Cambodian Monks protesting the Vietnam War?

That would impress me.
Too much pollution

Refrence post #28 or exercise those fat little fingers and google it yourself. Im not making this up man I really have so little vested in this other than annoyances. I get viral campaigns and they suck unless you are one of the countless mindless drones that buy into them and annoy the supreme beings who laugh at them!

Anecdote is not data. And this viral campaign most definitely does not suck if you are trying to find a cure for ALS or raise awareness for the disease. It was freakin' genius. But hey, sorry it bothered your Facebook feed. . .

If they wanted to raise awareness perhaps they should name the disease after a famous person that everyone knows.
