One suicide every 40 seconds: World Health Organization report

The research found that suicide killed more people each year than conflicts and natural catastrophes, accounting for more than half of the world's 1.5 million violent deaths annually, World Health Organization staff told reporters at its presentation in Geneva.

WOW

I know it's insensitive of me to say, but without all those suicides this world would be alot more populated than it currently is.

Suicides suck, but they may help with overpopulation (imo the biggest problem in the world today)

It amazes me that our species is flourishing numbers wise when you consider all the yearly deaths from disease, suicide, accidents, murder, war, hunger and other causes.

Did you guys hear about the cop in Turkey that took a selfie with the suicide jumper in the background and people got all butt-hurt like he pushed the dude off the bridge?

Pic?

Yes. Whenever you ask something of a cop, he immediately says "do you know how terrible events we witness everyday?" And there is also the tendency to blame a bad thing one cop does to the entire department because of the uniform. But they all act like a gang most of the time that thinks in a perceptional frame of "there is us cops and then there is the rest of the world" so I guess it goes by the territory.

Isn't this istanbul?

It's a daily routine here to show off for the news cameras for the folk in there. Most of them don't have the balls to do it, or simply never intended to do anyway. That is everyday's work for an Istanbul cop.

Not really that amazing when you think about how awesome sex is.

Wasteful consumption makes overpopulation seem like a bigger problem than it is. There is evidence that the population is starting to stabilize and may even decrease after 2060ish. The total fertility rate in almost all developed nations plus china is actually below the replacement rate of 2.1(2 to replace parents .1 for those that will never have children of their own). Many of these nations have already aged beyond natural population growth and short of massive immigration will see a population decline in the next century.

Even in America where there is "healthy" population growth the evidence points to a stabilizing population. American population growth and fertility rates are pushed up by latin American immigration and immigrant birth rates. A trend that is itself slowing drastically.

The graph above is a fairly accurate depiction of fertility rates in population rich India. These countries will continue to grow but most of it will be from "momentum". As their populations age we will likely see similar stability or decline that Europe and Russia are facing in the short term.

There is still a young population and a high TFR in Africa but they have started to trend down as well. If their declining fertility rates follow the trends seen elsewhere it is likely that they will approach the replacement rate within just a few decades.

Insightful.. People think that overpopulation is a problem. It's not, especially not yet.

For anyone who wants to scare themselves with worries of the future, watch the documentary Demographic Winter. Basically, since all the populations that heyhey references have negative population replacement rates, the world is heading for economic disaster.

This is a good point. Many studies have linked economic growth as a factor in a decrease in population growth. Most studies were done to debunk the ludicrous idea that slowing the population can somehow lead to economic growth. It fits right in line with poorer American immigrants having the highest rates, but decreasing drastically as they navigate upward in a relatively easy to maneuver social scale (though, still not easy enough to maneuver, and becomes increasingly more rigid with each other legislative molestation).

Fewer people to spend money = less money moving through the economy = fewer jobs needed = job loss = fewer people spending money = etc. etc.

To me it is a problem.

I love to camp and fish. every year there are less places to camp and fish and all those places are packed full of people (alot less wildlife) and I have to drive further and further each year to find good places to camp.

i went to the provo river on a TUESDAY IN FEBRUARY and the place was a like a walmart parking lot.

Well there are certainly different levels of overpopulation. SLC is nothing compared to the anchovies in NYC. Overpopulation in an area isn't indicative of a global issue though. People are moving to Utah every year because of the high quality of living and booming economy (relatively speaking).

But the message is the population is already decreasing globally, and it's going to bring with it a crazy amount of unintended consequences.

Also, i have no idea what the statistics are but if i had to guess i would guess that a higher percentage of suicides come from poor people, drug/alcohol addicted people, homeless people, etc etc than well off people.

If that is in fact true then if there were no suicides then maybe there would be a large increase in poverty, homelessness, drug addiction and things like that.

Again, i know that suicide effects people from all walk of life, including rich or well off people, but i would be curious to see if it effects the less fortunate at a higher %
