What's new

Mormons lol

Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Lawrence Krauss, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking....

Are they insecure or arrogant? Neither

They tell the truth and they ridicule religion as it should be ridiculed, which is what I am doing now

Some of those guys are megalomaniacs and have mastered the smoke and mirrors of rhetoric straight in line from the classical tradition stemming from Demosthenes and Isocrates, e.g., Christopher Hitchens. He has become the deity to folks like Yell42, who think their form of thinking is so blatantly obviously correct that the rest of the world is laughable at best. Some of the others have a much more nuanced understanding of the divine. The truth of the matter is that the human condition is fraught with uncertainty and constant flux of reality and self understanding. Religion is a dynamic aspect of this human condition, and an attempt to even define what religion is requires rooms of scholars ranging from the vehemently dogmatic to the bordering on enlightened. Where does one draw the line of religious/spiritual and not? What is magic, and what is not? You obviously have come to juxtapose yourself with respect to religion via the scientific process or your self imposed personal power garnered through your identity as someone who knows what other less enlightened folks do not know, sees what what other less enlightened folks do not see, and acts in a way that other less enlightened folks could not. In short, you derive your personal power, and obviously flaunt it, more or less in the precise way in which adherents to ancient mystery cult would do. Nuance and flux is something young people never want to admit, because they know it all already, and something that scientists try hard to cover up or spend a lifetime researching and something that the intelligentsia exerts its creative prowess to explain. Glad to see you've got it all figured out, though.

If you're going to attack someone's religion, at least make it an intelligent attack. There are just so many things wrong with this. I spotted five items right away:

* Many Mormons (myself included) believe that God used evolution to create people.
* The phrase "spirit orbs" has no meaning in Mormonism. I'm not even sure what it's referring to.
* The LDS scriptures don't say Kolob is a planet, they say it is a star.
* The LDS scriptures don't say that God lives on Kolob, only that it is the star that (in some sense that isn't explained) is closest to where God lives.
* Kolob is mis-spelled.

Mormons should be ashamed of themselves for worshiping the spirit orbs of Klolub.

Wait, am I still high from last night?

Yes but it seems unlikely that they distinguished a difference between a planet and a star.

Even if I didn't I wouldn't be. If a person is ashamed of their beliefs then perhaps it is time to change their beliefs.

Colton. Why didn't you respond to my message? I asked if you could change my name brah.

Mormons are no different or no more unreasonable than any other religion following people. Are satanists, muslims, sikhs, pagans, jehovists, or catholics any different? They all believe in ideology created by some men. Nothing to discuss here - lets move on.

FIXED!

Yes but it seems unlikely that they distinguished a difference between a planet and a star.

Abraham chapter 3, which is where the Kolob reference is, does in fact distinguish between planets and stars. See for example v. 17:

17 Now, if there be two things, one above the other, and the moon be above the earth, then it may be that a planet or a star may exist above it...
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/abr/3?lang=eng

By my count the chapter uses the word "planet" 5 times and the word "star" 7 times.

Well okay. They know the word "star". I'm not criticizing Mormonism or anything, but aren't some of you being a little disingenuous with your responses, claiming you don't know what the picture is talking about?

I'm not a Mormon, so correct me if I'm wrong but:
"Spirit orbs" obviously referring to the "first estate" or, our existence as spirit children or spirit people, whatever we want to call them. Souls even. The "first estate," is like the pre-life part of our lives. Our life here in the mortal realm is the second estate.

Back when we were in the first estate, we lived on Kolob with God. Our spirit bodies were stuffed into our human bodies, but in the process, all memory of the previous spirit life was lost, because our human bodies don't have enough space or something. Kolob, as far as I understand, is where god lives with his wives and spirit children who haven't been stuffed into physical bodies yet.

Again, I'm not criticizing, and I hope Mormons will correct my misunderstandings of their beliefs, but that's what the picture is clearly referring to.

I don't recall any spirit orbs living on Kolob in any of the religion classes I took at BYU. I remember that we existed as eternal incorporeal beings in Heaven before God sent us to Earth after the war between Adam and Lucifer. I've always wondered how exactly you conducted a war when the participants cannot be harmed in any way. How was the winner determined?

See Colton's post on page 2. Most Mormons would understand what that pic is trying to make fun of, but as Colton has stated, the meme gets it wrong.

I have never heard of "spirit orbs", although there is absolutely a belief in a pre-earth life (or pre-existence as it's commonly called). And I've never been taught that our spirits were "stuffed" into our bodies and that's why we can't remember anything. Some of your understanding is correct. Perhaps the meme is just trying to sensationalize the matter as an attempt at humor... I just think that it's done in poor taste, as was the OP of this thread. For all the everyone-is-equal talk we have on this board, it's amazing to see this stuff pop up.

Just wanted to ask why people follow 'mormonism' and why they listen to the words of some guy called joseph smith who was clearly a giant fraud and most likely suffered from mental illness

I mean all religions are a joke of course, but mormonism is just beyond hilarious because its so relatively new and just rehashes the same crap and stupid illogical ideas from the thousands of religions before it

lol, in a normal world he would have been sent straight to the psych ward

I think if you want to know about it, you shoud call the missionary dept and ask them to seen some "elders" over to explain it.

I don't call it a "normal" world where we have a college-indoctrinated class of professionals supposedly trained to deal with facets of human intelligence who have such a stupid reaction to people who have vivid imaginations and perhaps speak liberally in favor of fantasies. Just dissing them as nutjobs, or rounding them up and confining them in some facility, and drugging them, is not a "professional" way to deal with humans.

Amost everyone I know, or have observed carefully, will at some point in life display some irrational thinking, accept some fraudlulent assertion and some such.
