2014 College Football

I think you missed the point of the conversation.

Someone said that byu could go undefeated for 10 years in a row with the hardest schedule in the nation and not get into the playoff.

Do you agree? (That is what was being discussed btw)

I was directly responding to Colton's remark that BYU "absolutely" gets into the playoffs with a P5 schedule and an undefeated season. That's why I quoted his post. Not really interested in discussing the hypothetical of BYU going undefeated for 10 straight years.

But then you didn't actually respond to it. You just said "Oh, that's not possible." Do you disagree that if BYU plays a top 30-35 schedule in difficulty and goes undefeated, then they would get into an 8-team playoff?

Don't expect to get a real answer from jazzman... He flames and flames and then slinks away when he's backed into a corner

I told you I disagreed with your thinking and then gave the reasons as to why. How do you not comprehend that as a response?

As far as your 8 team scenario, it's a tricky question considering that format doesn't currently exist. My best answer is: it depends on the year. During a season in which nobody else goes undefeated I guess it's possible. In a year in which 2 or 3 P5 schools go undefeated and there's 3 more 1 loss teams behind them, I see the playoff commitee excluding them. It's not fair, but I think the committee will always be favoring P5 schools. BYU will always start out with a strike against them until they join the party.

The key here is: play a top 30 schedule and actually go undefeated. As BYU is currently built, do you think they can do that? Not trolling here, but in all honesty, Bronco couldn't go undefeated in the MWC. Now we're sitting here talking about him leading a team to an undefeated season against a P5 schedule?

So jazzman here is operating here under the premise that we do not need to devote any effort or time to unrealistic hypotheticals.

So he also doesn't bother thinking about whether or not someone will ever love him.

You disagreed with whether the scenario was possible, but you didn't say whether you agreed or disagreed with my statement about what would happen "if".

I disagree completely. With a 4 team playoff, I could totally see that happening, but I don't think there's any way that happens with an 8 team playoff. Not if BYU has a P5 quality schedule.

Yep, that is the key.

As BYU is currently built, do you think they can do that?

What does "as BYU is currently built" mean? This season? Obviously not. Next season? The season thereafter? Who knows. Depends on the players. Just like with any team.

Obviously only a couple of teams do this each year, so of course it's not likely. But it's possible, and gives BYU access which they WOULDN'T have if they were still in the Mountain West (because then their schedule would never be tough enough).

Let me be more clear: if there's 8 teams and there's not enough undefeated and 1 loss teams to fill 8 spots, then yes, it's possible BYU gets in. Why I think it never happens is that if BYU is playing a SOS in the 30's, there's no way they don't end up with 1 or 2 losses. Until they can recruit more speed and talent, especially at the CB position, I never see it happening.

I think it happens for sure while there are only 4 teams. As far as 8 teams go, call me when the playoffs expand and BYU runs the table against P5 competition.

No, not just like any team. We all know the reasons BYU is different. I think BYU can attract better talent if/when the go P5, but until then, how do they start getting difference makers across the board. A Taysom Hill or Ziggy Ansah is not enough. As Ute Fans have learned, even if you have a 3 or 4 star at every starting position, it still doesn't make you deep enough.

If BYU gets shut out of the P5 permanently, I think they need to call the MWC or AAC immediately. Most BYU fans will disagree but I think it helps them in recruiting in some areas, it gives them a yearly championship game to play for and if they schedule their OOC games right, their schedule could pretty much looks like it does next year.

Hey,

I haven't posted in awhile but I had an interesting idea of fixing the college playoff mess.

8 Team playoff.
5 Power Conference Champions receive auto-bid.
3 at large spots with an interesting caveat. The losers of the Conference Championship games are not eligible for an at large spot. This essentially extends the playoffs into the Conference Championship games, and leaves some marquee squads available for stand alone bowl games.

In effect, we would have a 13 team playoff for the price of 8 team playoff. Granted, for my idea to work the B12 needs to expand into a conference big enough for a conference championship game.

What do you guys think?

Sure, you have to get all of the right players at just the right time. But, for example, if BYU had had (an uninjured) Taysom Hill-led offense to go with their dominating defense from 4 (?) years ago, then that would have been a great team instead of a very good team.

You think "Come play for us, we're in the MWC" is a better recruiting tool than "Come play for us, we're on ESPN every week"??? I certainly don't.

Sure, and all Utah needs to do to win the PAC is get their 2004 offensive team back.

Doesn't the AAC have an ESPN deal as well? I certainly think it helps BYU recruit kids in Florida when they can sell kids on the fact that they can come play at UCF twice in their career. It works for any area that has a team in their conference. And even if it is just the AAC, I think being able to show kids conferences championships doesn't hurt. Also, if BYU went to either conference, they probably do so while retaining BYUtv and an Espn deal in some form. They would have that much leverage. I think it helps with fan interest as well.

Love it.

I would rather be in the mwc than be independent.

If we were in the mwc, I would still give a **** about the season.

As an independent, the season is already over and I really don't care anymore.

Huge props for speaking the truth. I watched USU-Airforce on Saturday night. Neither team are anything special but it had the feel of a conference game and it was fun to watch. By comparison, watching UCF-BYU certainly didn't have the same feel.

I DID NOT say with the hardest schedule. I don't see anyway in hell BYU ever has a schedule hard enough to be relevant. The teams in the big 5 conferences play 8-10 games against big 5 teams. BYU won't get that and their schedule will never be good enough. That is why I stated they could go undefeated 10 years in a row and not be considered. The schedule will never be tough enough to the committee.

An 8 team playoff changes the discussion. My statement was that under the current system they are not getting in.

I agree 100%
Sucks to be jealous of both in state schools

Just want to say that there are crappy teams in big 5 conferences.

I'm not sure that there will be 3 top quality teams every year. If the season ended right now(based on the ap poll) those 3 teams would be Notre Dame(5), Eastern Carolina(18), and Marshall (25). Considering that Notre Dame will be playing football in the ACC next year I'm not sure how you could justify it. Can you pick a team that isn't even ranked over a team that lost their Conference Championship game by a field goal?

I think if they were going to have guaranteed slots they would need to break up the current conferences. That isn't going to happen. So we are probably stuck with a committee.
