More death threats -- Woman take video of her walk through New York

teaser.jpg

Here is the founder of Hollaback foundation (the foundation asking for your donations in the video). I am not going to go that far but many are accusing her of being a nasty feminist who is jealous pretty girls get attention because she doesn't so she wants to destroy love and sex for all. Stop giving into your sexual urges guys!

Two things.

#1. Don't take bad behavior from a few thugs in New York freakin' City and try to project that crap on me as a man. I live in a decent sized city and don't see a whole lot of this. And, yes, ABSOLUTELY there is a cultural component to this. You want to fix it, speak to that culture, not EVERY FREAKING MAN in America. Of course trying to move directly to address the offending culture would be Racist. Soo. . .

#2. If only there were a set of codes and social norms that were passed down by society, especially from father to son that taught boys to honor, respect, and cherish women. That would be cool. Also, perhaps an impetus to step into situations where other guys are acting like jackasses and set them right. Oh yeah, we DID have something like that. It was SEXIST, remember? So we got rid of that because "defining roles" or something.

See that is the problem with this crap. If people want to target the actual problem areas with tools that actually work than let's get to work. Otherwise fricken' YAWWWWWN

What?

Chivalry. Men were trained to do sometimes silly stuff like open doors (even though woman can open doors for themselves) and give up their seat on the bus to women because it was an easy way for them to learn and practice empathy and to become more aware of the world outside of their immediate needs. Kind of like doing squat thrusts is stupid and unnatural, but the overall result can be beneficial. Generally opening a door for a woman then wolf whistling at them as they went through were incompatible, so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Very nice blog on the subject. https://dilbert.com/blog/entry/feedback_for_feminists/

"My first reaction is that editing ten hours down to two minutes is so overtly manipulative of the viewer that I had a bad reaction to it. I understand why they had to edit; no one watches ten hour videos. But while the video clearly states it is edited, the human brain still processes it as if it is in real time. My emotional reaction to the video is a reaction to a woman being harassed every five seconds, and that is not what happened"

"The harassment was mostly in the form of powerless men hurling compliments at a woman that probably has a better job and more education than nearly all of the men in the video. Remind me again who the victims are?"

Also no one yet responded to my https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norah_Vincent post of a lesbian feminist woman pretending to be a man for 18 months and got clynical depressed and was happy she was a woman.

Oh my.

I'd guess the vast majority of women in North American cities prefer current gender-specific cultural norms/attitudes to those of the 1950s. I'd also guess that intelligent, progressive men are far less likely than others to engage in this type of behavior.

The mistake you are making is that chivalry was primarily ABOUT women. It wasn't.
And as for "intelligent, progressive men are far less likely than others to engage in this type of behavior." Ya'll are the ones telling us that 1 in 4 women are raped on college campuses, no? Isn't that where a lot of "intelligent, progressive men" reside? Or is that a problem of the unintelligent progressive men.
Additionally the neighborhoods being walked through here aren't great hotbeds of Tea Party activism.
Overall, I give you attempt at moralizing a good solid C-.

At least it beats your D+.

Also, it's hard to find the appropriate counterfactual for rape at colleges when women's only acceptable role was in the kitchen, pumping out babies in the good ol' days. FWIW, this discussion about respect/objectification/communication/empathy is healthy. Culture has always been and will always be fluid, and we all play a role in how it develops over time.

I'd rather extend the right of self-determination to as many people as possible, and try to figure out how to deal with predatory anti-social behavior/people than give up on it and restrict the rights of people more likely to be preyed upon "for their own good". Maybe that's naive, but it seems worthwhile to me.

Not that you disagree with any of these vague, white knight platitudes...I just don't find conservative fear mongering terribly useful.

This might possibly be the single most intelligent post ever written on Jazzfanz. God bless Canada, and for the love of GOD, please bless those who embrace the truth, no matter how difficult it may be, and whichever country they belong to. Amen.

Thanks, man, much respect.

Rape card, really? SMFH.

You want to draw a nice bright line between street harassment and rape, but in reality, men keep blurring the lines. Both come from the same source of men seeing women's bodies as objects for their amusement/pleasure, and discounting the women underneath; one is just a much more severe form.

LOL - the producers of the video are being now being accused online of editing out all the white people that made harassing remarks. The chick in the video.....I mean, the young lady in the video, has confirmed that for some reason or another only a few white guys made the final cut.

Go get em' One Brow!

I do keep saying that everyone has been programmed with these racist memes. It would not surprise me at all if the editor saw the black men as being more egregious in part due to their unintended reactions to the skin color.

Why? Can't we just treat people the way they want to be treated without them being blood relatives?

We should be able to, but for people whose sense of empathy is underdeveloped, making it more personal is sometimes the only was to get them to see the consequences of what they do.

This whole "seeing women as objects" thing. Man, I just can't take that argument seriously.

Men desire women. (exceptions obviously exist) They desire sexual intercourse with women. Women, likewise, desire men. Acknowledging that fact does not turn women into objects anymore than it turns the man into an object. But in reality, we are all objects. So to say that has me scratching my head.

Not only that, but women (and men) want to be desired. This is not humanities dirty little secret. This is the force that drives our society. This is everywhere. Men are no more culpable than women. In fact, it's not something that any of us needs to be ashamed of. We are sexual creatures. This is not a problem. This is not something that needs to be fixed.

What needs to be understood are personal boundaries and the rights of each individual to accept or reject the advances of others. Obviously any physical contact has to be consensual.

That's it.

I empathize with that woman. If I was in her shoes I would definitely be uncomfortable. But what did any one of those men do that we could force them to stop doing?

We are talking about a cultural change, and I agree that it won't happen overnight. It also won't happen if we don't push back against this behavior. It will take effort, reminders, and gradual retraining of the way men think about women.

I don't think men need to change the way they think about women. I think men need to think about their behavior.

Men wanting to have sexual intercourse with attractive women is not a problem, imho.
