Punch Bowl Re-Filler
The huge problem with Favors/Gobert pairing is not their individual offense(which can be a problem, too), it is the team offense that suffers most - the spacing gets screwed totally. There was a point last night when the Suns refused to guard Gobert anywhere out of 15 feet. They just sagged off him and clogged the paint. I can't stress enough how much of a problem this is. It means that one of our players guards himself out of 15 feet. It means the opponent can double other player in certain situations without having to worry about getting abused for it. It means the opponent can use 1 player to guard 2 people in certain situations around the paint, thus having much easier task of help defense and covering the perimeter. It means that the pick and roll with Gobert becomes obsolete - when Gobert's man just doesn't come up with him to guard him, it means creating less mismatches.
Now imagine you have 2 player of this sort on the court at the same time. Favors is a bit better really, so that's unfair and he will make them regret sagging off him this much, but the point is still valid - we'd have 2 players on the floor who cannot score out of the paint. I simply don't see it as a viable option offensively in the long run.
The next question would be can Favors and Kanter play together? I'd say evidence shows they can't. At least not that well.
The Jazz have three players who have to be in the paint to be effective in Favors, Kanter and Gobert. I don't think there's any question who the starting 5 should be, especially after last night. Favors absolutely dominated the paint on both ends. Derrick is not a PF; he doesn't have the range, although he's improved his offensive game considerably the last couple of years.
I'd argue Kanter has pretty much proven - barring miraculous development over the next 79 games - that he doesn't have the quickness to guard 4's, nor can he be a consistent outside. So he has to be a center.
So that leaves us with the question of who should be the backup 5: Kanter or Gobert. I know Enes has some Big-Al type moves underneath, but he's just too much of a liability on the other end. Plus he's up for a contract. IMO, Jazz HAVE to go with Gobert. Much rawer, but has shown the potential of being an elite defender. And there's no reason right now he can't just play the 15-18 mins behind Derrick. Gobert is not ready to be a starter. If he gets there in 2-3 years, that's fine. Then we have two amazing assets in Gobert and Favors. It could very well come down to Favors signing at a hometown discount if he wants to remain in Utah. Or Utah could include either in a blockbuster trade.
IMO, the Jazz need to part ways with Enes and pursue a stretch-4. Maybe happens at the deadline or perhaps via free agency next summer. Kanter needs to be in a situation like Charlotte. He's not going to be effective in Quin's offense where he can neither be the anchor inside nor be a perimeter shooter.
