Has anyone here bought a 4k (aka uhd) tv? I'm looking at a couple right now but thought I'd see if anyone had some input. The biggest downfall I'm seeing so far is the lack of content, but Directv has said they will be broadcasting in 4k before 2016. I think it would be awesome to watch a game (football or basketball) in 4k and can't wait. The other thing I'm wondering is timing. Is now a good time to buy? Should I wait until after Christmas? For the record, I refuse to do the Black Friday thing, so you won't catch me sitting outside a store at 2:00 am hoping to get 1 of the 2 sets they have available. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The lack of content is definitely the biggest con to getting one of these TV's. Currently, I don't think there are any shows even being broadcast in 1080p much less 4k. Most shows are either 1080i or 720p. Furthermore, companies like Directv and the various cables companies offer what folks in that industry call HD Lite. I guess they're going to be offering Bluray discs at 4k but I wonder if those will be true 4k or some sort of upconvert. Hell, many of the new TVs out there with that motion setting have irked a lot of people.
As far as timing goes, if you're waiting for the right time to buy, you'll always be waiting because there will always be something new. That being, right now, 4k TVs are going to be super expensive. You'd be considered a new adopter and new adopters always pay a premium. I'd definitely wait a couple of years. If you have the right room for it, I would rather invest in a front projection system.

^^^^This. I would save my money and wait if I were you. I am sure you have other needs or desires that you would rather spend that kind of money on in your life. It's obviously your money, but I would think there are better things you could spend it on.

I wish I would have never bought a 3d tv
Thanks for the replies. The 2 tv's I am looking at were a 65" Sony with 3D for $2800 at Best Buy and a 70" Vizio at Sam's Club for $2448 (there is also a 60" Vizio for $1648). My old tv just isn't cutting it anymore so I started looking around and was very surprised to see how inexpensive the 4k tv's are. I was thinking they were still around $10k.
i want to play games on 3d tv tho. does it suck ***?

I played uncharted 3 in 3d and it was awesome..... but I only use the 3d like once a year and it made the tv cost alot more, so it has not been worth it
There is no comparison between the gimmick that is 3d and 4k which is obviously the future of HD content. If you actually watch 4k content (like some Netflix offerings), it is a vastly better picture than you'd get with 1080p. It is something you just have to see for yourself.

Yes, that's how capitalism works at its best. Otherwise, we would have nothing that we have today. And no it is not some bs. It is just the next jump in resolution, just like moving from SD to HD 15 years ago.
You'll buy it along with everyone else once content becomes more available.

That said, regarding your post, I agree on the 4K I suppose. People will buy it. The curved tv on the other hand is garbage just like the 3D tv's. That's bs capitalism and the flock will not follow the shepherd on that one.
You can get a 50" 4k TV for $1000. But since you just bought a TV, by the time you buy your next one, 4k will be the standard.

4k is too early in its development. At this point over-rated and over-priced. But if you don't mind a $7k TV running those cool background disks they use for display in the store, and still showing DVDs and TV pretty much normal then go for it.

Faith got nothing to do with it. I've worked in the semiconductors industry long enough to understand how these things work. Right now, existing processes are close to achieving price parity for 4k v. 1080p displays. Since no extensive retooling is necessary for the transition, fabs will have to go out of their way to produce 1080p displays in a couple of years, which won't make sense when the competition is producing 4k displays for the same price. Keep in mind that 4k is not only 4 times the resolution of 1080s, which makes them look MUCH better on larger TVs, but they also are superior in many other technical aspects, like quality of 3d for those who are into that.
And what Log is saying about $7000 is not entirely true. I'm sure you can find 4k TVs that go for that much, just like you can find 1080p TVs that sell for outrageous prices, but like have been mentioned in this thread, 70" TV will set you back $2500 while 50" go for $1000. So they're already close to 1080p prices. Since 4k cameras are also becoming widespread, available content will continue to expand in the next few years.
But either way, it's not like I own stock in any of these companies. If you think you know better, then continue to think that. I thought I'd give an opinion from a position of knowledge in response to OP question, but it makes no difference to me, really.
