Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was fatally shot in the head at close range by a gunman Saturday morning outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Fox News has confirmed.

Eight others were shot, including three of the Arizona Democrat's aides, at Giffords' "Your Corner" event held at a Safeway grocery story. A suspect is in custody.

The three staffers who were shot worked out of Giffords' Arizona office.

Giffords has held multiple "Your Corner" events over the past four years, the aide told Fox News, adding that she had held three previous events that this venue before.

In November, Giffords was re-elected to her third term as representative of Arizona's 8th Congressional District. She is married to astronaut Mark Kelly.

Disgusting, lets hope she pulls through.

How sad and terrible for her family.

I'm from Arizona and have gotten about 10 phone calls from this today. People are actually saying that potential violence has been simmering there for a long time with numerous people showing up to Congressional campaign rallies for Democrats while actively displaying their right to bear arms.

Locally the big stink presently is that Sarah Palin posted this image on her website during the 2010 campaign:

The use of cross-hair and rifle imagery is probably in bad taste as a general rule, but after the fact this just looks horrible; especially when coupled with "help us prescribe the solution."

And yes, one of thos crosshairs in Arizona represents Giffords.

Im interested to learn more about the shooter and what sort of background he has...I will wait until more details come out...as opposed to all the conjecture and garbage out there currently.

His facebook pages lists Sarah Palin and The Tea Party as his interests.

Check it out before they take it down.

Not that I'd put any blame on Palin for this, but boy that graphic sure seems a lot more awful now. Wonder if she'll comment on it.

Kicky, what was this senator's stance on gay marriage, abortion, immigration, and health care? Do you know?

Amazing.

Are people really going to argue that this nasty tea party/am radio/foxnews media frenzy of continuously bashing Democrats (and anybody else standing in their way) has absolutely no effect on the minds of people? People who are already angry or unbalanced, will take a piece of Glenn Beck's idiocy, combine it with the tea party nonsense, and read that crap off Palin's website and take things wwwwwwwaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy too far.

We saw the outrageous behavior at the town hall meetings (why anyone thought those were productive is beyond me). And now we're seeing it manifest in a truly tragical manner.

This nation has got to get back to a civil dialog. I never remember Bush bashing Clinton so much (vice versa). In fact, I never saw such nastiness in politics as I've seen since Obama has been elected. Race, economy, wars, immigration, social issues, and the media are all coming together to create a volatile atmosphere such as I've never seen before. Perhaps it was like this in the 60's during the Vietnam War?

Pro choice, didn't support the Arizona law, and appears to have supported health care reform. No mystery why she was a target of those from the right wing.

Also, it wasn't like this incident was isolated:

The truly horrific news in Tuscon today defies any sort of context, but it follows an incident of violence targeted at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords earlier this year.

On March 21, 2010, the night the House of Representatives passed its sweeping health reform law, a window was smashed in Congresswoman Giffords's office in Tuscon, the city she has represented in Congress since 2006, where she was shot today. Her staff stayed late in the office, as the health care vote happened well into the night in Washington, and after everyone had left, someone smashed a window.

Wow, you're serious? Nevermind the dude probably has some serious mental issues, it's all the Tea Party's fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. A lot of folks don't remember sign saying "Kill Bush" prior to 2008. There's a lot of selective remembering going on.

2. You don't actually watch or listen to Glenn Beck, do you?

3. It was a lot worse in the 1960s and 70s; not that we can't get there again if we really try.\

That said, this is a tragic event. Our prayers go out to the families of those hurt, and hope that the Congresswoman recovers. It is way too early to determine the motive for this seemingly senseless act of violence.

Of course not, but they have influence on these types of unbalanced people.

the civility needs to return. Did you even see a town hall meeting during the health care debate? Have you ever been to a Republican Caucus here in Utah? Wow, you should have seen the inflammatory remarks made to destroy Bennett

This doesn't have any influence whatsoever? Will you honestly say that this couldn't insight an already angry, broken, or unbalanced person to take action into their own hands?
