An open 20-foot shot early in the shot clock is a green-light attempt for guys like Steph Curry, Dirk Nowitzki, Kyle Korver, LMA and maybe Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard and a handfull of other top-tier players who make 45% - 50% of those looks.
For most guys, it's not the look you want. It doesn't make the defense work either.
Generalizations like this generally are true but only generally so.
If a guy shoots ~40% from 20' and is struggling to shoot ~30% from the 3 then you let him shoot the 20'.
1) hitting that shot can help get you out of a slump and rebuild confidence
2) It does make the D work if you can knock down shots in the pocket. it forces them to go in front of a screen rather than behind it.
3) #2 is really your only option to make them respect you if you aren't/can't knock down the 3.
