Hey Viny, come to WV for some hiking. Not as much wilderness within many other states in the US.

How about some good WV hikes that I could do in a day trip from the D.C. area? I'll be living in Alexandria, VA for the next 3 years and need to keep it wild. Thanks KM32MVP.
I went to Fish Lake every year growing up. Many fond memories there. Seems like we were setting up camp in the rain every year too.
That is just the type of thing I love to do. Maybe I'll have to take a gander up that way after wifey finally pops. There is so much of that type of stuff in the Uintas it's not even funny.

Probably the best hiking/wilderness in WV is in the eastern part of the State and base of the eastern panhandle, which would work out perfectly for you.

Looks pretty comparable, or maybe even a little tougher, than my Mount Timpanogos hike mentioned a couple of posts previously. How long did it take?
Wow. Mount Timpanogos looks completely legit. More info please. How long did it take you? What kind of elevation? Snow? Were there other people on the trail?

From the Aspen Grove trailhead it's 12 miles up and about 4000 feet of elevation. So 24 miles round trip. What my group wanted to do was hike up to our camp, 6 miles in, drop some gear off and then summit which is another 6 miles. And then hike back to camp. So 18 on the first day. We did do this but in retrospect it was probably not the best idea.
We started at 9am and didn't get back til about 5 or 6pm though Im not really sure as the 2nd part of the day is kind of a blur. The climate was incredibly daunting. Personally, I have never experienced cold of that nature along with the winds going up the mountain and at the peak. It was in the low 30's from one camp spot to the peak and the winds were 35mph on the peak. I lost one glove on the trail -- which was later recovered -- which added to the brutality of the day. I also made a rather stupid and neophytic mistake and did not drink enough water as we were hiking to the peak. It was so cold that cold water was not on my mind. This resulted in some really dangerous physical reactions, the worst being, lethargic thinking and slurring of words. As we were summiting, the sun was setting. At that point we knew we had to get off the mountain sooner than later. We descended in the dark with headlamps on. It was ****ing sicky gnar gnar.

Best thing about Timp are the mountain goats. I love mountain goats.
Really? That's kind of cool? Are they assholes? I remember the marmots on Mount Whitney are the dicks of creature world. Those little ****ers! There was no wildlife to be seen on SG.
The way that most people go it's about 14 miles round trip, with 4500 feet of elevation. When I hiked it, the way I went up was a bit more elevation change than that (and maybe slightly less distance). Took me about 4 hours up and 2.5 hours back down. I did it in late summer, so no snow on the trail. And weather was near perfect. There's a glacier right next to the trail (the way I went up), that some people from my group played on. We saw lots of other hikers. If I had stayed in one spot and watched hikers go past, I'd say there would have been a hiking group every 5-10 minutes. Close enough that you could pretty much always see another group.
I'm planning to hike it again next summer, this time with my daughter who will be 15.
That's very funny... Aspen Grove is the name of one of the two trailheads for the Mount Timpanogos hike.

Yes, real wild goats on the Timp hike. They were pretty tame from what I could see.
We also saw a moose. Apparently you have to watch out a bit more for them, but it didn't bother us.

I had a moose chase me in Yellowstone. I was on a little moped and was going as fast as I could go (maybe 20 mph).... it got pretty close to catching me before giving up
