Revisiting the Trey Burke trade

trey needs to watch some DJ and Glove tapes and learn how to attack the pick. you gotta have stronger core and needs to have quicker feet, but it's all mental and stamina. you can't get tired. you can't get discouraged. you gotta have little bit of psycho in you. you can't be soft. collectively our team is soft. we are too young and don't have the barker.

As a New Orleans fan I fan tell you Chris Paul had many of the same defensive issues Trey Burke is having. Paul was an awful defender off ball, on ball and especially in PNR. It wasn't until after the summer he spent with the Olympics team that Paul came into the season with better defensive play. And Paul is still a shakey defender minus the steals, but much more improved. People here would be killing CP3 if he played on this team based on the same standard they are holding Burke to.

now that's a type of production i expected from trey's 2nd season. tad lower on points, but that's understandable because of hayward's took that next step.


i would be very happy with this number. anything lower isn't good enough.

The thing about a point guard is that you are penalized when your team hasn't gelled. You can tell there are times when Trey is running the play and others are not. At this point in Trey's development, he needs people to be where they are supposed to be in order to be fully effective. You can also see when the Jazz are dialed in and Trey looks awesome. I think that some of the questionable shots he takes are when he gets frustrated from the set breaking down. As the players around him continue to improve, so will Trey (miraculously!)
On another note, you can see this with Exum as well. I think the only bench player Exum fully trusts on the block is Gobert and ONLY with the lob. However when things get loose and wild and he just plays, he looks marvelous!

CP3 is an elite scorer, very good shooter (47%/36%) with career averages of 19/10/4/2. He can get a shot off whenever he wants. The standard we have for Trey is WAY below that.

Agree to disagree, he does have godlike talent and is going to be incredible. FYI, he is 19 yearso ld, 6'11" with arms down to the floor with a handle like Durrant.

I don't know about being incredible, but he has a ton of talent. I'm in no way convinced he will become an All-Star, but it will be exciting to see what he can do.

That's my thing. I don't even think he really knows how to play basketball. He is certainly athletic and can do many things, but the hill that he has to climb in just learning the game is SOOOO steep, that it will be difficult for him to break out as anything but a specialist. He is raw AND wild. Generally you can overcome one of those things. I can't think of anyone who has overcome both to become a super star.

Paul at this stage is farther ahead then Burke no doubt. But it's two completely different situations. Paul was able to be the ball dominate guard in a PG based offense. Burke is not.

Not to mention you are comparing in his prime Paul numbers. Look at Chris' first two years. Not nearly as impressive as his career averages.

They got Jabari, Utah got Exum: advantage Milwaukee (for now).
Jazz chose Kanter instead of Knight, who Milwaukee traded for. Advantage?

They acquired 3 sharp shooters with Mayo, Bayless and Dudley that are still quite young.

They have emerging young players like Henson, Sanders and Wolters.

They developed Middleton that was an unknown playing in the D-League two seasons ago.

They have a good 6th man as Ilyasova and a tough veteran player as Pachulia.

They have two potential future All-stars in Jabari and Antetokounmpo.

This season seems like they will battle for a playoff spot.....how long did it take their rebuilding? One or two seasons?

To be fair, everyone outside of Philly in the Eastern Conference will be battling for a playoff spot. Unless Jabari turns into something really special (which isn't out of the realm of possibility) they are built exactly like a treadmill team.

Yep. I mean, they could probably be decent in the east, but I would rather root for a team that actually is trying for championships, not just to make the playoffs in the east. Jabari might be really good, but he also might be Cory Magette.

If the Jazz were in the Eastern Conference, they would currently be a 3 games out out of the 8th seed with their current record. And their current record would be better with a slew of home games against the dregs of the East. . .

I do like what they have done with Brandon Knight, however. It will be interesting to see how he handles the handing off of responsibilities to Glannis and Parker. He should be up for a contract next year and it will probably be a good one. Be interesting to see if the Bucks pay him then ask him to take more of a back seat. . .

Milwaukee has been yoyoing for YEARS.

'10-'11: missed the playoffs, traded draft rights to Jimmer for Tobias Harris, Udrih, Stephen Jackson and Livingston
'11-12: missed the playoffs, drafted Henson
'12-13: barely made the playoffs, drafted Giannis
'13'14: worst record in NBA, drafted Parker


I won't bother listing all the trades they made, but it's notable they basically got Knight for Bogut when the music finally stopped after a couple of years. But if you really look at it, it was NOT a 1-2 year rebuild. They've been rebuilding and rebuilding again for many, many seasons. Also remember barely making the playoffs in the EC isn't that difficult. Conservatively, I'd say their complete overhaul has been at least 3 years, with this being the 4th (beginning with the trade of Bogut and Jackson). They are now a .500 team, with some decent young talent.

Jazz are now in year 2, the complete rebuild beginning with the departure of Millsap, Jefferson, Foye, etc.
