Realistic expectations for Exum, our future star

Away from all the improvement our guys have to make on both ends of the floor. I'm curious of getting a wide picture of what the expectations for Exum are in this community. Any players you start seeing legit comparisons with? What do you see as being his ceiling? NBA.com writers are praising him for a quicker development. Is it too early to determine yet? I'm slightly more stoked than I was when we 1st drafted him. It's been a long while since we've had a player you watch and think 'there's something about him'.
 
Exum can barely dribble with his left hand, is still physically developing and has awful stamina. Let's wait a year or two before figuring out realistic expectations.

Those were our pre-season complaints. Now we're supposed to talk about his lack of aggression, inability to fight through screen, hiding on the offense, passing the ball with 2 seconds left on the clock, etc.

Yep, those are all the main points.
 
I have no expectations for an 18-19 year old kid. There are glimpses but that is all there is currently.

Here is what is somewhat scary: His stats are about identical to what Diante Garrett put up last year but Garrett's shooting percentage was better.
 
Will crocodile Dante ever be as good as Zach lavine? That is what I am most concerned about.

And if Exum is still putting up those numbers in 6 years, when he will be 25 like Garrett was, then I'll be scared.

Like Vinylone, I have very few expectations for Dante. I envisioned him playing around 15 mins/per behind Trey and showing us flashes of his abilities. I knwo we'd like him to be better, but of all the top prospects, we knew he and Vonleh were the biggest projects. Future superstar? Don't know. But I'm really not worried about Exum becoming a quality starter...eventually.

I personally would be disappointed if his ultimate ceiling is a "quality starter". I would be okay with borderline all-star.

I think "quality starter" is his floor. There are so many really good PG's in the league and Utah is a small market so maybe he doesn't make it to all-star. At least he'll be a perennial Olympian/World Cup player. Only 19 right now having had no college, I really think we need to withhold judgment for 3 years or so.
 
I think right now there is only a single question mark about Exum. Does he have that competitive spark that elevates skilled players from solid starters to all-stars? I haven't seen him play before he was drafted by the Jazz, so I don't know anything about his bball personality outside of what we have all seen. But I don't recall a single all-star that played as passively as Exum in their rookie year. Kobe was around Exum's age when he entered the league, but he was as hungry then as he is now. Sure you can come up with a million excuses. "Kobe was more physically developed" or "Kobe is a unique player" or whatever. But you're either hungry or you aren't.

So is Exum burning on the inside because he's being kept on a short leash? Or is he perfectly happy being as passive as he's been while he develops? That is my one and only concern.
 
who remembers Kobe's first few years in the league ??? I remember a fast mouth with only flashes of what he would become.

Not true. Even on his first year, Kobe was aggressive. In fact, Kobe was selected to the all-star team when he was Exum's age.

I remember Horny absolutely schooling Kobe in the playoffs Kobe's rookie year in a 4-0 sweep for the Jazz.

correct, he flapped his gums and then got spanked. Kobe was 17 if i recall his rookie year ?? Either way i agree the only thing of note is whether Dante has the inner drive and burn. From what i know talking to a few people here who know him although he is a very down to earth polite kid he's very single minded and focussed. I have no doubts he'll be something very special a few years down the track. I'm just hoping either Burke gets traded or Quin revokes his the green light he seems to have.
