When am I coming over to drink beer with you?
I brewed today so I'm feeling especially frisky when it comes to beer.
I made an Imperial Irish Red Ale, but I'm flipping the script and calling my imperial ale a Dynastic ale, because this beer was originally brewed in honor of my wife.
Just to throw extra info out there that no one probably cares about but the first version of the beer I brewed today I brewed under a blood moon. It was called "Young Red Dragon Dynasty" but I'm still working on the name. The first one was a 5%ABV beer, this one is an "imperial" version meaning that it has a higher abv, which should come in a little above 7%. So, instead of calling it "Young Red Dragon Dynasty" I'm going to call it "Red Dragon" a Dynastic Irish Red Ale. I think it's a funny play on the use of the word imperial and it still honors my wife.
Just for unneeded clarification, my wife has red(ish)--don't tell her I said red(ish), she's pretty sure it's red--hair and was born the year of the dragon and her name is Dynasty.
Here's a pic I want to use for the label but it is copyrighted.
That sounds like a really good beer. Irish reds are always my favorite. Hard to find good ones here though. When is all of Jazzfanz coming over to watch a game and drink your beer?
Joking aside someone should arrange a Beer and Jazz night. Where everyone brings good beer and we try a bunch of different stuff and watch the Jazz. I would do it since I have a decent movie room to watch the games in but people dont like coming to Provo.
Yeah, Provo sucks.
I'm kidding though, If you'd do something like that I'd do everything I could to be there and to have some beer for people to try.
I would definitely come but you are right about provo being an issue..... that's a long way to drink and driveThat sounds like a really good beer. Irish reds are always my favorite. Hard to find good ones here though. When is all of Jazzfanz coming over to watch a game and drink your beer?

What SLS's have the best beer selection? Being in Utah county sucks but the tiny one in Orem actually has the best beers that I've found. They mix it up a bit and have stuff you can't get at the other ones I go to.
I love the Beer Co-op in slc. It is all over Wasatch and Squatters beer and they have both "utah beers" and high alcohol content beers. Plus you can fill growlers there. I always go to Springville or American fork liquor stores because the other ones are too small and crowded.
I've begun an experiment to determine the best abv/$ for beer at Utah state liquor stores.
First up: Peter's Brand Classics -- Dutch Style Pilsner $1.39/16.9oz can, 5%abv
![]()
Strong showing. Setting the bar high out of the gate. Few beers cost less per can and most are 12oz vs 16.9oz, although at 5% ABV I imagine the abv/$ criteria will kill this one pretty fast.
This is a pilsner along the lines of Budweiser or Stella Artois (yeah, no real distinction there). As such it is very acceptable. More malty than either, it would be my preference in the light (not a diet term) lager category. Certainly worth the money if you're buying light lagers at the LQ.
This guy rates a 0.61oz of pure ethanol per $1.
5%abv*16.9oz/$1.39=0.61
More to come in my Cheapest Bang for Your Buck at the Utah State Liquor Store series....
So I have continued my journey to find the Cheapest Bang for Your Buck at the Utah State Liquor Store.
Today I am doing a head-to-head comparison of the two very cheapest beers I could find at the liquor store. Today I stopped at a different store than I usually use, the Murray store on State St. That store has the worst beer section of any of the SL Valley stores I've ever been in. That location needs a makeover pretty bad.
Anyway, I bought two of each, Icehouse (5.5%abv) and Busch Ice (5.9%abv), both $0.99 per 12oz can. Shout out to fishonjazz for this weeks entry.

First up was the IceHouse. I'll just come out and say that I didn't have a very favorable opinion of IceHouse going in. I figured it would be a couple steps worse than 4%abv Budweiser I could buy at my local gas station. I was actually very surprised. Not only did it stand up to a "Utah" Budweiser, I'd say I liked it better, enough so that I would take an IceHouse over a Budweiser even in the ABV was reversed. So I was pretty shocked, to be perfectly ****ing honest wit you.
I'd say the flavor was considerably more full. There was much more mouthfeel than you'd get from Bud but the beer didn't seem thick or heavy. The maltiness was up a full notch or two from Bud and it was actually easier to drink overall.
Next up, Busch Ice.
Even after my first surprise I was still expecting very bad things from Busch Ice. I mean, this is a ridiculous beer to me. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I'm curious how these breweries qualify these beers as "Ice" beers. If they actually scoop out ice chunks to increase the ABV I'd be impressed, but my guess is that they briefly chill the beer to about 30F just before the filtering process and call that "brewed below freezing," but whatever.
For a second time I was surprised. This beer was just fine. With the additional ABV I'd pick it over a Budweiser. If the ABV was even? Not sure. But it certainly held it's own. I'm impressed.
Again a little more malty than Bud, but not as much as IceHouse.
So, the results:
IceHouse, at 5.5%ABV and $0.99 per 12oz can they score a 66.7 (0.667oz of ethanol per dollar spent) on the scale, but I give it bonus points for flavor.
Busch Ice, at 5.9%abv and $0.99per 12oz can they score a 71.5 (0.715oz of ethanol per dollar spent). No bonus points here, but to my surprise no points taken away.
I really enjoy these reviews.
I consider icehouse a "not bad tasting" beer. It's a little more carbonated than I would prefer. I mainly buy it for the cheapness and strongness
I might have to try this busch ice.
Btw my favorite beer found at the liquor store is linenkugel sunset wheat or summer wheat (I can't remember which is correct)
Linenkugel summer shandy sucks though (tastes like Mike's hard lemonade)
I'm having vodka and juices.
Also, a lot a ladies around, so having some Kahlua. Tasty.
Vodka goes really well with juices. Ladies go pretty good with anything, imhfo.
haha.. yeah.. they kinda clingy, in a good way.
Hopefully they manage to peel themselves off the sheets afterwards.
