We are close to something here guys. We can offer a contract to Wesley Matthews? Butler? To plug into that SG role. Possibly get a higher draft pick now and have a nice prospect. We now have more assets that we can trade for something too (maybe to get a higher pick in the draft, Russell anyone?).

He will turn into a star for OKC. he will be the post weapon that they never had and an offensive rebounding machine.

Tibor Pleiss better come over and be amazing!

So wrong. We can offer a max to a player on July 1st now.
1. The Jazz could renounce Kanter or not offer him the QO, and keep most of that cap space.

2. As such, the Jazz only gained cap space by dumping Novak, who they shouldn't have acquired in the first place.

A quick rundown of the Jazz cap situation:

Salaries for Gordo, Favs, Burks, Exum, Trey, Hood, Rudy and the 7th pick (at 120% of scale): $48,685,757
Salary of Booker if he's retained (can be bought out for $650k or, as a result, easily moved): $53,460,575

Total with roster charges ($525,093 x 4) without Booker: $50,785,947
Total with roster charges ($525,093 x 3) with Booker: $55,035,854

Projected salary cap: $66.5mm

Cap space without Booker: $15,714,053
Cap space with Booker: $11,464,146

Maximum salary for a player with 0-6 years of service time: ~$15,549,179

So...the Jazz may be able to sign one good free agent IF they choose not to bring over Pleiss or Tomic.

Less than I thought, but still plenty for a Middleton, Deng, or some big impact SF.

Someone also fill me in on why we're getting excited about free agents because of this move. How has anything changed? Renounce Kanter and we're in the same situation. The only thing we've lost is the ability to use Kanter as a bargaining piece. Buy high (trading Deron) and sell low (for "cap space"?)

I totally agree with you. There were quality players on the trade block but we didn't make a run for none of them...Dragic, Isaiah Thomas, Brandon Knight, Afflalo, Reggie Jackson and so on...we had tradable players and draft picks to offer but nothing happened....I guess mainly because quality players are not interested in playing for the Jazz!
Same story will be in the free agency this summer...we have a lot of money to spend....but which talented player will accept to play for the Jazz? Let's stop to deceive ourselves!

Kanter was really undervalued by most fans on this board. I think he is going to surprise a lot of people with how well he can do with OKC. A post player that has wing shooters will open up the game and actually give him someone to pass to if he gets doubled. Kanter put the Jazz in a tough position, but I think the trade was not good. I would rather roll the dice and try to keep him. Even if we lost him, it would be worth the risk compared to what we got in trade. Hopefully we can get a FA acquisition that propels us forward. Or maybe Tomic is ready to come play.

My guess is his shooting percentages go up, he defense looks better and he averages 2-3 assists a game for the rest of the year.

Are you Max Ergul?

Last time I saw this much complaining on this site was when we drafted Hayward.

We all know how that turned out.

At least we aren't Philly. What the hell are they doing?

We could offer a max to Knight if we wanted. I'm not interested in those other guys... Dragic it isn't a skills thing but for the fact that he wouldn't resign with us.

I can see Kanter looking a lot better in OKC. They don't need him for his midrange game or passing. They need him to grab offensive rebounds. Plus he gives them an inside scoring presence in the playoffs when the outside game isn't there.

I'm just incredulous that he brought so little.

We picked up some minor prospects, a draft asset and a **** ton of capspace by offloading him and Novak.
The Jazz picked up $3.75mil of cap space by dumping Novak, who never should have been acquired. Effectively, the Jazz traded the option to hold onto Kanter this offseason if nothing better comes around for a late 1st, two 2nds (including the one they received for Novak) and Pleiss. If DL doesn't turn the cap space into something this summer, he should be fired.

For folks who are saying we paid $9MM (Perkins buyout) for a first round pick: Perkins salary is $9.1MM, minus Kanter $4.5 and Novak 3.8, leaves ~$0.8MM net, over 1/3 season is ~$300,000. They probably save that much on the buyout. The pick costs us nil.

1. Why would you keep him and not offer the QO, when you can trade him and actually get assets? If we were going to keep him we just had to make the QO...
2. Why shouldn't we have acquired Novak when we had cap space to use and we got a second rounder out of it and were able to get rid off him in this deal?

People just can't shake the #3 pick stigma. If we drafted him 15th and he put up the same numbers, no one would be complaining.

We did acquire some other stuff too, but yeah you nailed the cap thing and the Novak deal... Frickin Massai

Don't discount the prospects we got... they might be decent. Remember the Gasol for Gasol deal... everyone thought that trade was such a fleecing... Memphis got a prospect they liked in Marc Gasol. Not saying either of these guys is a Gasol, but they could be meaningful role players. Kanter was a role player... just didn't know it yet.

Maybe. We will let the results speak for themselves. . If Kanter starts for OKC over Adams, his stats will look much better. Book it.

I'm messing with you... I normally agree with your takes.

I don't think Kanter can pass... just don't think he sees the game. he will fall in line though over there with Durant and Westbrook. I think he can be an okay defender when motivated.

This trade ia soo bad it got me thinking how bad the other trade proposals must have been

1. Kanter for Eric maynor
2. Kanter for Charles Manson
3. Kanter for Joseph Stalin
4. Kanter for bin laden
5. Kanter for hitler

I know some of these people dont play ball and some are dead. Still seem like more value than the jazz got trading kanter.
