Max Out Matthews?

I would hate to **** up what we are building by signing the 4th best player on our team to a max deal

Who among the crop of FAs this coming off season can we get who will make a truly significant difference but who will not cost something close to max money to get?

With an eye to the increasing salary cap, teams are going to be throwing money at FAs. We are not going to get anyone who can make a difference without paying a hefty amount for him.

Let's just accept that every team will match their players offers, and that no free agent will come here. Lets use all the extra money we have to sign 5 ****ty rotation players at 3 mil each, and admit that we never tried!

S**t, some of you negative Nancy's are ridiculous. We have money, therefor we start throwing it at players and not worry about if they say yes or no.

Exactly.

Excellent post.

Or we can take the alternate view that we have five pretty damn good starters in place: Gobert, Favors, Exum, Hayward and Burks and perhaps some decent backups and look to bring in a couple of very good veterans for MLE-type money, just as we did with Booker. Trevor was a steal for $5M.

I agree that we do have some damn good starters in place and some decent back ups. When was the last time some "damn good" starters and "decent back ups won a title? We need to go the extra step and start working on becoming elite as opposed to damn good or decent.

Good point.
Still don't want to max matthews. Maybe we have to though

You are missing the point that 14/15 million is going to be the equivalent of 10/11 in 2017.

You got some numbers to back up a 50% increase?

Not being a smart *** either. I'll listen if you've got solid, founded evidence.

Good plan. But Mathews isn't that guy. He's just another good starter.

All estimates I've heard are that the cap will jump to around 90 million in the first year of the new CBA(because they get from 900M TV deal to 2.6 billion) and will probably keep increasing after.

Well thanks for the link

And all.

But this is all contingent on nothing changing in the new CBA. The NBA wants a "smooth in", or stepped increase, at least one owner is willing to get rid of "max contracts" if the players get rid of guaranteed contracts... there's a lot going on that.

And it's still 66(2016)-87(2017), which isn't a 50% increase, only an increase of 21m, which is 31%, unless I'm the idiot that thinks he can do math but can't.

The player association refused the smooth in option this week.

15 million out of 87M is 17.2% of the cap
11 million out of 66M is 16.7% of the cap...

unless you are extremely pedantic about half a percent difference, Cy's point stands... 11 million this coming year is about equal to 14.5M in 2017

Last year.
None of the SA players are "elite" anymore. Kawhi stepped up and had a great series. But during the regular season, Parker was their leading scorer at 16.7 pts/per. When I say we have, right now, some pretty damn good starters in place, I am also expecting ALL of them to keep improving. Hayward probably has the least upside because he's already at such a high level. Imagine if all our players can improve their games as much as Hayward did this off-season! All of them have great attitudes. And they have a fantastic support group in place with Quin Snyder and his coaches.

Are we title contenders right now? Certainly not. Next year the goal - barring some amazing acquisition - is to play .500 ball and if healthy, perhaps contend for the #8 seed. If you look back at OKC, that's exactly the progression their team took. We don't have a superstar, but if we have fringe stars like Hayward, Favors and Gobert and have Exum climb up that level and Burks or our pick this season, I think we can build a contending team.
