Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

If Cody is lifting weights, that could be throwing his body off. He's apparently doing a lot of lifting, according to Will Hardy's post-game. A big workout for his shoulders could result in the airballs he put up today. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense to me. He was like several feet short on an open wing 3PA.

I think best case scenario he's just brain broken right now. He's just not ready for the NBA. Probably should have stayed in school for his development, but you cant pass up lottery money.

When you watch his SL games vs NBA, he's just playing like he's stuck in mud with the ball in the NBA. Needs to get more developmental minutes in the G-League where he is forced to do more with the ball.

I think next year he might play more G-League minutes with Hendricks returning + whoever we draft.

I still definitely pick up his 3rd year option. He's probably two years away and you should just stick with him the full 4 if he's showing any kind of physical and/or skill improvement year to year.

Sadly he sucks and we were wrong to draft him. At least Flip and Collier look great. If only Cody pans out, I don't think it will take much for Hendricks to take his minutes

I think Cody is a very cerebral player and it probably hinders him at this point more than it helps. I feel like I can see him thinking his way through the game vs just feeling his way through the game. The hope is that his body gets him to the point where his brain tells him he can go for it, and then at some point he just is reacting by instinct.

I remember being very high on Cody through the draft and so I went back recently and looked at comments through the draft threads (mostly to make sure I wasn't too embarrassing, lol). Almost everyone who liked or at least understood him as a prospect talked about him being a long term project and would need time before he would be an impact player. I get that he has been worse than anyone could have imagined, but I do think we're all being a little impatient with him. Even though I'm not confident at all that he will become an NBA player, at least logically I can reason that the majority of things that make him unplayable could be related to getting stronger and the potential mental unlock that could have for him.

Since he's a Jazz player, I will just continue to hope.

Cody did score 36 points in a GLeague game so there's that. He also had some rare moments with the Jazz where he was playable. Also he looked very good in Summer League last summer. If he works hard with the weights this summer perhaps he will be a passable NBA player.

Agree w/this generally, but still most concerned about his motor. That is usually the cutoff for people w/physical gifts in the NBA between really being pretty good or not.

This is the concern, honestly. Is he apathetic, or is he just low-key? When he makes a really good play, or a bad play, why doesn't he react to it?

It just might be the way he is wired and I'm not saying that's good or bad. John Stockton wasn't overly emotive if I recall but just was a cold blooded killer. Cody has to get his strength up this off season or he could end up like JHS where the Jazz decline his option.

It looks like Cody is done for the season (contracted Mono). Is there enough good plays from him for someone to compile a highlight film? I have like maybe 10 plays throughout the year that stick out to me. How many do you need for like 3 minutes of highlights?

I almost lold when I saw he was out with Mono. Just such a terrible season and ends with a whimper. Hopefully this doesn't hurt his offseason weight gain. He needs to come in 20 lbs heavier or else I'm out completely.

( f a w k )

I could probably name all of his highlights, though I don't remember the exact teams they were against.

Cody must have had mono all year
Like if I had to explain his game... a way to put it would be "he has basketball mono". Its a little too on the nose and the script writers will be found out if they are not careful.

Cody beat the following guys off the dribble and scored at the rim: MPJ, Payton Pritchard/Al Horford, Scoot Henderson/Shaedon Sharpe, Dillon Brooks, and a few others, including the Twolves when he was matched up against McDaniels. There was a nice highlight drive against the Pelicans where he beat a couple defenders. He also had a nice drive against the Bulls after Matas Buzelis was outplaying him all game--might've just been against Coby White though.

He had one strong rebound I remember where he boxed and pushed out Jabari Smith in the last Rockets game.

He had nice blocked shots against Jaylen Brown and Ja Morant. He also had a nice block where he tracked a guard around a screen and blocked a 3PA.

There was a game where he made three 3PAs, I think. Edit: He was 3/4 against Minnesota on 2/28
