What's new

1-11

I haven't been impressed with Cotton. He played all right in inconsequential end-of-season games. But like I said in the latest game thread, he doesn't really do anything well. He's worse than Burke at running the offense. He pushes the pace, which is nice, but he wastes too many possessions with his chucking. He's not much of a defender. He's a meh shooter. He's tiny and it makes it difficult for him to finish at the rim. I don't care if he replaces Burke as I consider the latter worthless, but I don't see him developing into anything more than a passable backup point.

I don't know.. Dude has the best floater on the team and finishes well around the basket.

I think its sad how Exum gets a free pass, and Burke gets **** on.

seriously ?? because despite Dante's painful to watch at times reticence the team actually functions well with him on the court and he plays D Burke frequently costs the team on both ends of the court

We're certainly all entitled to our opinions. And, this being the greatest league in the world, I find it impossible to compare players across the league and actually rank them from superstar to serviceable. So I can't possibly know where Cotton would rank, or what his legacy as a player will be. He went undrafted. As one columnist put it recently "there's a reason Exum was drafted. There's a reason Cotton was not." But for someone who can't run the offence, he's had the best +/- of the guards in the past three games. -3 in the Houston game, but Burke was -18 and Exum -20. They all stunk up the joint, but he shot 7/14, and did have 3 assists. And it was not a meaningless game for Houston. Not sure shooting 50% is the definition of "too much chucking"(?). Snyder has specifically told him to shoot when his shot is there; he ain't winging their offence for heaven's sake. He's doing what Snyder has given him the green light to do, and what Snyder expects of him. He has openly said as much, "I want him takng those shots". No, not the next coming of Isaiah Thomas, I don't think anyway, but he does not belong in the D League. I believe they played him, well, first, Burke's back of course, but to let all teams see him by having game tapes. So I have no idea if he's on this roster next year.

But Snyder likes him:

"You get excited about his potential," Snyder said. "He is a unique guy. He's not a big guy, but he is quick and he is tough and he plays hard. I think everybody could feel and see what we saw tonight and I think, whatever the future holds, he is certainly showing that he is capable of playing in the league."

I might also point out, and correct me if I'm all wet, but I think Snyder ultimately would like Exum and Burke to run the offence like Cotton does. The Jazz are the 3rd slowest team on pace, and Cotton flips that figure on it's head when he's running the team. Being more like Cotton on offense is what Exum needs to learn. And so does Burke to some degree. Correct me if I'm mistaken here.

And, as Lindsey said at yesterday's presser:

"Lindsey said Exum’s lowly season stats were expected for a rookie and that despite being established as the starting point guard late in the season, he would get leeway to develop his all-round game next year without the expectation of being a dominant ball-handler.

Lindsey said Exum and fellow guards Trey Burke and Bryce Cotton would be asked to focus on improving their open shooting, defense and quick transitions into offense.

“All the while, as their skill set improves, as their experience becomes deeper, then I think they can handle a larger share of the possessions,” Lindsey said.

Cotton won't be starting, he may not even be backup, or even on the team. But surely Snyder wants to see more of Bryce Cotton in how Exum or Burke run the offence?

42% shooting is not chucking, nor is 35% on 3pt shots.

Too early to give up on Trey. His drive game is coming along nicely. I think he's getting that the less shooting and more driving to the basket is better for the team. He's cheap, has little trade value and isn't a bad guy. We should keep him around and see if he blossoms.

I was totally rooting for Trey, still would probably, but Cotton's appearance is the first time I would consider an Exum-Cotton rotation on PG. Wish the season had more time to go so that we can see how much consistency Bryce would bring to this.

We share the same sentiment. Burke is a Jazz man and I find that I have to support him because of his good attitude and stoic demeanor on the court. That said, his shooting is woefully horrific and he misses too many layups which should be automatic for players that CAN get to the rim.

Trey had some gaudy college stats and I will agree with some that Cotton's numbers came in meaningless games but he put the hurt on some pretty good point guards in Dallas and Portland the past week. Locke's comments about Trey has got to not have these 1-11 3-15 shooting night. When it's not dropping he's got to let someone else shoot.

Trey shot 90% from FT on his rookie year, 75% this year. I think this alone is a sign of something going wrong, most likely mentally and possibly temporarily. Bad seasons happen.. '13 draft class was weak but Trey is not as bad as people think and may well have a strong '15-16 season. I'm fine with giving him another season off the bench. But if he fails again then he sure is a goner.

First off, since when does Exum get a pass? Secondly, he has 3 years to improve before we can compare him to where Burke is now. I'm betting by then the difference between the two will be night and day. I understand fans wanting to stick by a player, and I actually appreciate that more than those who pass judgment too quickly, but at this point I wonder if some fans might be in a state of denial.

Exum was a rookie. Eventually, nobody gets cut any slack. He needs to work on his offense. He needs to learn transition basketball. He has all the tools, including great speed. He needs to develop his court awareness/anticipation, the very strengths Cotton used to go with his insane quickness to become excellent in transition. Cotton learned it all in his senior year. I'm sure some of that was innate ability, but he was tossed in there as a PG due to injuries and did what he had to do to stay on the court. If Exum is still struggling badly late next season, there will be grumbles aplenty. But this was his rookie campaign.
