14th Tank Platoon

I will believe a lot more in the tank when we make some trades and get some "injuries" going.

For me, the "tank" has always meant finishing somewhere in the 5-8 range. I never thought Utah had the talent (or I guess I should say, lack of talent) to finish below the likes of Philadelphia, Orlando, Boston, Milwaukee, etc. The lack of a quality bench, in my mind, would cost Utah from having a shot at a .500 record; but I never thought Utah would be horrible. Fortunately, Burke was out early - at the position Utah was thinnest - and the Jazz got off to a FANTASTIC start. It was a mirage...Utah was never going to be that bad. Personally, I'd rather see the "core" playing well, which they have for the most part, although Hayward and Kanter have been very inconsistent and Burke's shooting has been disappointing. But Gobert has been a pleasant surprise.

Even IF the Jazz land in the 7th/8th spot, that still means a player like Vonleh/Gordon. GS pick will bring a good back-up and the Jazz bring over Neto. If Lindsey goes out and adds just one additional FA in the $8-$10M range (or two if the Jazz don't decide to match on a Hayward offer), that's not a bad group going forward.

Just checked the boxscore of the Boston - Orlando game. They are in the 3rd quarter and Boston leads.

Ronde with 15/4/4 and 7/8 from the field. If he gets his mojo back that would be huuuge!

But it's not a championship squad. That's the point. "Not a bad group" doesn't cut it for me.

Not yet. No "superstar" but I don't see many weaknesses. That group could easily grow into the Pistons model. There is NO way at this point to tank into one of the bottom-2 picks. And it's very unlikely to "tank" into the bottom 5. Other teams are doing that just by virtue of their roster. AS was noted by Ford, I believe, the best-5 for Utah is Favors, Kanter, Hayward, Burke and Burks. So Corbin is actually HELPING the tank by giving additional minutes to Jefferson and Williams. Injuries are the only way to do it. And Utah has had a few of those, holding out Hayward and Favors recently.

Go big or go home though, homie.

Only 2 1/2 games out of the 2nd pick. Bucks are clearly #1 but the Jazz, Magic, Kings, Lakers, Celtics, Cavs and Sixers are all fighting for 2-8.

Been waiting for that Marvin & Jefferson trade all season, tbh.

Once they're gone, we're in biz-nesesseseseseseseseses.

LMAO could easily grow into the biggest exception to the rule in modern NBA history?

Unless Burks or Kanter develops into a true All-Star player, then the Jazz will have to go out and get one. Easiest way for a small-market team is through the draft. So far, Burke and Gobert make me feel pretty good about DL and his draft prowess. After that though, the Jazz might need to target a guy and trade some serious assets to land him and lock him up. Those guys only get traded right before they hit RFA and in the last year of their 2nd contract because the team is worried they won't resign. The Jazz have the luxury of locking up all of the Core5 guys for at least 3 more seasons, getting a better coach and then adding a piece if needed.

That Pistons team is the HUGE exception to the rule (that you need a legit superstar).

This Pacers team reminds me of that Pistons team in a lot of ways. If they win it all this year, then I'll have a little hope. If not, then I'll be even more convinced that we're never winning a title without a true star.

Either way, that Pistons team is without a doubt the EXCEPTION to the rule. You don't try to build your team like the exception, you build it following the rule, if you're serious about winning titles.

Houston landed Lin, Asik, Harden and Howard all within a 3 year period. An aggressive GM can always find talent if they push the issue. I have faith in Dennis Lindsey. Ty Corbin, not so much.

I personally think the Jazz had a deal in place to acquire Harden that OKC liked better than what Houston offered, but he wouldn't sign an extension with us.
