What's new

14th Tank Platoon

Did a little work myself and here is the remaining schedule for the bottom 8 teams.

- Lakers will get killed(13 games against tier 1 teams. Really?)

- The Kings have 21 games against tier 3-6 teams. Gay and Cousins are playing again, so they could do work...hopefully!

- The Celtics have just 4 games against tier 1 teams left, so they could to some work as well. Let's pray for Rondo.

- The 76ers are playing 11 games against tier >5 teams maybe they can win some more games.

Other than that it's quite balanced I would say. BTW didn't gave much thought about the tiers so there could be some disagreements.

looking at these teams, this is starting to scare me

number of times finished outside of playoffs in past 5 years (including this year)

cavs - 4 (consecutive)
orlando - 2
Philly - 3
Milwaukee - 4
Boston - 1
Kings - 5 (consecutive (really 7 but who's counting))
Lakers - 1
Utah - 3
Knicks - 1 or 2 depending on this year
Detroit - 4 or 5 (consecutive) depending on this year
New Orleans - 3 or 4 depending on this year

The red's indicate teams that were good last year, and now are not -- either under performing or were blown up

So what i'm worried about, is these bottom dwelling teams are:
1) all (besides detroit) small or mid markets
2) have been to the lottery several times and are no better off

The jazz have now missed the playoffs 3 out of 5 times, are we entering this cycle?
I know the argument, we have talented young guys and can sign free agents to push us back into the playoffs. -- doesn't that argument apply to almost every team i just listed though? I have a feeling we are going to need more than a high pick and some middling free agents to become contenders. We need new philosophies from the toes up. new coaching staff, new floor leadership, and a generational talent to get to where we all want to be.

color me pessimistic about our chances of fulfilling those needs.

Us and the Cavs have 8 back to backs still left, the other teams have 6 or less!!

The Lakers and Cavs play each other tonight, as do the Sixers and Celtics. So...at least two of those teams will pick up wins. Not bad.

Good follow-up, Primetime and Zulu.
The fact that EC teams play each other more is certainly in our favor. You can even go up to the next level and look at teams currently in playoff position. Certainly Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia, etc have a better chance of picking up a win against Charlotte, Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington, etc. than Utah does against WC playoff teams. In fact, the #3-#8 teams in the EC would ALL miss the playoffs if they were in the WC. Even Memphis at #9 in the WC has a better record than the teams currently at #3-8 in the EC.

And I think this was a point of emphasis in many pre-season predictions. EC doormats would beat up on each other while the few weak teams in the WC (Utah, Sacramento and, um, Phoenix...c'mon we ALL thought Phoenix would be bottom-5) would be hard-pressed to get wins against the other WC teams.

Man the east sucks!!!

Yes, it does. And in that respect, the lottery and maybe even the playoffs need to be changed. Not fair to have a team like Charlotte locked in to the #15 seed, while much stronger teams like Memphis, Minnesota, or Denver get lottery picks. I say take the sixteen best teams regardless of conference and put them in the playoffs. That likely ensures teams have to at least be at .500 to be in the playoffs.

Jazz will be lucky to end up 5th or 6th worst.

Bucks, Magic, Philly, Lakers should be bottom 4. Then it's a toss-up with Boston, Utah and Cleveland, with Sacramento breathing down our necks.

The Jazz need a go-to scorer, and they need more bench depth. I think the Jazz are actually in a situation similar to Portland last year. Their bench was the worst in the league and they were developing a couple young players. This year they pick up a couple free agents--Lopez, Mo Williams, etc., then Lamarcus Aldridge has a good year, and they're 3rd in the West.

Surprisingly, no. Many bad teams are entering 2014 still hampered by bad contracts. Jazz are fairly unique in having $30M+ come off the books in non-core players. Yes, raises have to be factored in for Hayward and Favors and cap holds for the draft picks need to be accounted for. But Utah COULD (not that they will) go out and get a MAX player with essentially no roster moves - other than renouncing rights to players they won't be bringing back, anyway. Not all tankers can do that. Can we find another quality guy like Boozer or Okur and convince him to sign early in the process?

That may be an attractive option for a player not named LeBron. Jazz can step right up with a contract. Other teams may have to say, well, we need to move a couple of contracts first, but we'll get back to you. That was GS' problem and Lindsey was able to profit by it. Being a facilitator also has advantages. DL could decide to go that route again with a contract or two.

OMG...please somebody tell me why the Cavs suck so much? They are playing the ****ing Lakers and are down more than 15 and it's not even halftime.

I don't really care who loses this one but really how can a team be that bad?

Word

I guess it depends on how you pronounce Stauskas. I was saying it more as a Stowwskas, but then I did it as Stahskas and it worked very well. People nearby probably think I'm tarded.

Plus the Magic are killing Detroit and Boston is up on Philly.

Orlando wins!
Lakers will win!
Boston will win!

Turning out to be a great night for the tank.

Who knows Gay playing against his former team, should be motivated. Lowry is out! A Kings win would be icing.
