What's new

2011 draft.....

Really young, got noticeably better as the season went. Has moxy already, led Kentucky to a Final Four appearance, even as a freshman (and despite not having a great individual performance in the tournament, made things happen when it mattered most). Great attitude and work ethic. Superb physical specimen for a PG with enough size (and judging by his bench press test, strength as well) to cover the 2 at times as well if it came down to it. Still very clearly learning the game but still quite good considering that at the same time.

The short version; His basement isn't that low, his ceiling is outer space.

Let me add 2x Gatorade national player of the year only 2 other players have ever done that.

That's why I brought up Carroll. There's probably a solid list of guys whose stats compare to Fredette, even in girth. But I'm old enough to remember Price who starred in the ACC when the best players in all of college basketball played in the ACC or Big East. No one doubted Price would translate. I'm sure I thought Nash was a fluke at the time. But Nash at least had all that Canadian National Team experience which exposed him to extremely talented players. Scouts would have seen him against NBA caliber guys. With Jimmer, you don't have that. You're guessing he can do it. I'm OK with guessing, but Jimmer is too much guessing at 12.

Your argument with Nash and the national team is flawed. Jimmer played on a hand selected team that trained with the Olympic team sounds like pretty good experience to me, and from what have read impressed a lot of players.

Billy this is one of those drafts when every player is a guessing game. Irving and his injuries/Body fat. Williams SF or PF? Kanter, Can he play against a person instead of a chair? The list goes on and on. I don't think you can up and say that any pick in this draft is a safe pick or in other words there is going to be a lot of "guessing" this year.

Every year is a guessing game. But guessing at 12 should be weighed against what guessing at 12 has been in other years, and more importantly how much guessing at 12 this year differs from guessing at 20 this year. That's my point. I see everything after 9 as a wild guess. So picking BPA at 12 has less worth than it ever has. The smart move is to see if anyone at 20 has deluded themselves into thinking the guy they want at 12 is worth giving something up for. Almost any asset PLUS the 12 is worth more than the 12.

But as I will say over and over, if the 12 can get turned into Biyombo, I'm on board.

News to me. Did he train against the actual Olympic team? If I was drafting Jimmer, I'd want to know a lot about this.

Not that young, will be 20 in December. As far as top picks go he is older than Kanter, Irving, Leonard, and Jonas.

“The USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee is thrilled to be able to give some of the top older college players this opportunity to be involved with USA Basketball this summer. I want to thank Jerry (Colangelo) and Mike Krzyzewski for involving the college players,” said Jim Boeheim, chair of the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee and an assistant coach with the USA National Team. “These 20 players now have an opportunity to be involved with USA Basketball in a summer when they normally wouldn’t and they’ll get a chance to play against some great NBA players. It will help them improve and it will help our national team be better prepared for this summer’s World Championship.

“We believe bringing in a USA Basketball Select Team will help the USA National Team be better prepared for the upcoming FIBA World Championship,” said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball chairman. “We had USA select teams comprised of young, up-and-coming NBA players train against the national team in 2007 and 2008. That proved not only beneficial for our national team, but also for the select team players who got a great training opportunity and became involved in USA Basketball’s pipeline. This will be a tremendous opportunity for these collegians to be involved in USA Basketball and to get a look at the next level.”

FWIW this is from Sam Amick. Dangerous to move down more than one spot because Cleveland would likely take Kanter.

"It should surprise no one that Minnesota is entertaining offers for this pick. Williams is considered by most teams (including Minnesota) to be the best player available after Irving, but it's hardly a fantastic fit. Michael Beasley has a similar skill set, and forward Kevin Love and swingman Wesley Johnson don't appear to be going anywhere. One source says the Wolves have considered moving down a spot or two to take Enes Kanter while getting additional assets in a trade".

If Minny wants veteran help so bad, then #3 + Bell (+ a future 2nd rounder?) for #2 could get it done, no?

The Wolves will want more than Bell or Tomic to allow us to move up.

Do both. #3, Bell and Tomic (who isn't going to ever come over or amount to **** anyway) AND if necessary a future 2nd rounder for #2. To draft Kanter btw. Not Williams whose lack of intensity and care on the defensive end scares me.

I don't know how much it will cost. Doesn't seem like it should be very much. But I too am leaning toward taking Kanter over Williams, given a choice.

I say stay at #3. If some other team wants the #2 it may be to get Williams. If Jazz want Kanter Jazz have to give up nothing. Surely the team that wants the #2 will tip their hand about who they want.

According to this ESPN article, Minnesota would be willing to trade the #2 pick for #4 and #8 in this draft. If the Jazz could trade a player and maybe #12 for, say the #6 or #7, they could parlay the #3 and #6/7 into the #2....if it matters to them.

https://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2011/news/story?id=6603100

Here's an example: The Jazz trade a player and #12 to Washington for #6 and #18. The Jazz then trade #3 + #6 for Minnesota's #2. The Jazz then draft at #2 and #18. They take Williams and Selby/Brooks/Jackson.

Interesting, Bentley. I wonder how he did in those practices.

Did you remember Kevin Durant's tweet back in January?

This was after some high scoring game of Fredette's. This doesn't tell us how he did in those practices, just that he can score (which we already know), made friends in Vegas, and that Durant is probably the nicest guy in the nba (which we also already know).

This is a crazy draft. I'm going over Valanciunas' game again now - one I was pretty down on before, but now I'm not so sure of anything. Valanciunas might be a nice combination of Kanter and Biyombo. Or else I'm no longer seeing clearly. Maybe I'm asleep.
