2012 GS for 6-8 2011?

Golden State's 2012 pick, top-7 protected, I believe, is likely to fall around 11 or 12 next year (assuming Jerry West doesn't work some incredible personnel magic over there and get them in the playoffs). Given that, would you be willing to trade that pick for pick 6, 7, or 8 this year? If so, we would have to hope the Wizards, Kings, or Pistons feel the opposite and that 12 next year is better than anyone left on the board at their respective positions. For sake of discussion, let's say the Wizards are a willing trade partner.

For me, it depends upon how the top 3 (and then top 5) work themselves out this year. The players I would target with pick 6 are: Biyombo, Leonard, and maybe, Knight. I like all 3, and I don't think any of them will be available at 12.

Biyombo, back when the Jazz had the 6th pick, was who I was hoping for. I think it was pretty evident that last year's interior defense followed the trend of the last 6 years. I'm pretty confident that at least defensively, Biyombo won't disappoint. At his worst offensively, he has to be better than Fes. Given that, I think he at worst would be a 20-minute-a-night backup. At best, Ben Wallace. Even at 6, I felt like he may be a reach, but felt it was worth the risk. At 3, I can't see the Jazz pulling the trigger.

Here are a few draft scenarios where Biyombo may make sense:

Irving/Kanter/Williams
Irving/Williams/Knight
Williams/Kanter/Irving (if only)

Biyombo does not make sense if we draft Kanter at 3. I don't want 6 PF/C tweeners on the roster.

Assuming neither Irving or Williams slip, I think Knight, Biyombo, and maybe...Singleton at 12 would be a decent haul for a draft. We certainly upgrade defensively (my main priority).

Given similar logic and personnel, here are some other drafts that I would be pretty happy to come out with:

Knight, Leonard, Montejunas
Kanter, Knight, Singleton
Kanter, Leonard, Fredette

and just for the heck of it, so Jimmer doesn't have to play defense again:

Biyombo, Leonard, Fredette

Thoughts? Any of those trios work for you? Do you have 3 favorites this draft who could be available at 3, 6, and 12? Or is the "legend" of 2012 too good to pass up?

I wouldn't trade the GS for anything except a top 3. Even if it ends up being 10, you will likely have guys like Austin Rivers, a better developed Terrence Jones, Marquis Teague, and Jeremy Lamb still on the board.

What if it ends up being lower than 8 and we get nothing?

Huh? Do you know anything about next year's draft? Nevermind.

Well I figured we would get a pick next year, but what are the protections on it? Some of the protections say if you don't get the 1st round pick in 3 years then it becomes a 2nd round pick sometimes.

Discussion has already moved on a bit, but I can answer on the protections:

Top 7 protection in 2012 and 2013, top 6 protection in 2014. If protection holds and pick isn't conveyed in 2014, it becomes second round picks in 2014 and 2016.

They are the Warriors and they generally suck, but they don't usually suck that bad. My guess is a pick in the #8-#12 range in 2012.

Interesting idea.

A haul of Kanter, Knight, and Singleton would have us back in the mix.

I wouldn't be down with taking knight #3 over Irving, Williams, or Kanter. But, he'd be great to pick up with a 6th if we can trade for it. We would have a solid NBA starter and backup at all 5 positions in a couple years..

This season it would be:
Harris/Knight (equal time until knight proves he can run the team)
Hayward/Harris(can play some at SG while knight develops)
Milsap/singleton
Jefferson/Favors
Favors/Kanter

I think we should stay put at 12 and gamble that next year we can get a better prospect if GS stays out of that protection zone.

Too much of a gamble if you think about it. We are already out of the top 7 no matter what. There are still good players, but we could be at 13-14 easy.
I doubt we'd get a player better than Knight or Bismack there.

I want quality top players. If we have an offer for either of those two players for our two picks I'm all in.
The GS pick is a decent asset, but it's being a little overrated here.
It could land us someone like Lamb, and turn out to be good, but the odds are higher it turns out to be meh imo.

It really depends on the new CBA and whether they will keep the draft age as is. If they do, then it is going to be a really deep draft. Guys like Austin Rivers are going to be pushed back into the range where we would likely be drafting. You have a point if they change the age though. I guess I am just not as high on Biyombo as I once was. I think we will take Knight with the 3rd pick like it or not.

If we could take this year's 12 and next year's GS pick to get Bismack or Knight you do it.
Disagree. If Utah really wants them they can take them at #3, or look to trade back a couple spots and still hope to get them. People are only falling in love with those guys because it's such a weak draft.

Outside of Derrick Williams or Kyrie Irving, there's no one I would trade future picks for - and even then I'd think about it.

This.
2012 should yield the Jazz someone like maybe Gilchrist, Rivers, or Lamb. Or maybe they could trade their pick next year + a player to move up into Harrison Barnes range. Maybe they'll like these other guys better and not bother trading up.
I agree with the majority - 2012 is a nice draft.

Can't help but be reminded that half this board wanted to trade the New York pick for a hill of beans pretty much every year since we acquired it. Obviously this is a little different due to the protection, but I doubt Utah wants to add 3 rookies out of this draft.
