2013-14 BYU Basketball #CougNation

Thought this was funny since we just talking about it. From Provo's Daily Herald today, notice Iowa State's logo:

About the rebounding. Mike actually does not rebound that well, the leading post rebounder is Austin, who actually doesn't have much of a offensive post game.
The leading rebounder per game is actually Haws who plays the 2 at 10.5 per. Collinsworth pulls down 8.3 and he plays the 3. Carlino pulls down 5.5 at the 1.

Iowa State's top 3 rebounders are 6-6, 6-6, and 6-4. BYU's top 3 are 6-11, 6-6, and 6-5.

I don't think rebounding will be so easy for either team. Rebounding could be the difference in the game for 2 reasons, lead to more shot attempts, and could get some people into foul trouble.

This should be a very good game.

BYU is a 6 point favorite I believe. Seems about right for a game in Provo. I take it Haws must be playing.

Iowa St. is pretty undersized, but they are really good at rebounding. Ejim (one of the 6-6 guys) led the Big 12 in rebounding last year. If Iowa State is to win, it will probably be because of offensive rebounds.

Like you said, it should be an excellent game, and a difficult first road game for the Cyclones. Many Cyclone fans are expecting a loss.

Austin has actually played pretty good......I might have to take back my, "he plays like a woman in the post sometimes." comment here soon. If he just keeps boarding like he has been, plays solid defense like he has been, and knocks down an outside jumper every once in awhile, I could live with that. He got schooled every time that Powell dude from Stanford faced him up, but not many post guys have the ability to drag him that far out and then put on the floor so not too worried about that. Pleasant surprise so far.

Even after taking down Michigan? You would think they would be fairly confident.

BYU's homecourt is intimidating. Plus, the way them Cougars have been playing is impressive. I'm fairly confident, however, as our best players are rather experienced. Kane is 5th yr. senior, Ejim is 4 year starter, Hogue is JUCO.

This is a good two-game stretch for Iowa St. because it simulates a week in the conference season. They'll need to get used to stretches like this.

Expect ISU to do this, a lot.

Good point, it will be good for ISU.

Honestly ever since people hoped and dreamed BYU would go to the Big 12, I've wanted it to happen possibly for the basketball more than the football.
It would be brutal, but awesome to play bball in the Big 12 every week.

Yes, and they surely would have been a better addition to Big 12 basketball than TCU. They are terrible.

They should. I think part of the issue is that the main help defenders have usually picked up a few iffy calls early due to the new rules and then they don't want to go meet somebody at the rim and pick up another one so they kind of just flash towards the guy hoping to derail his determination but don't jump up with him. They usually are in the right spots though.

Fun first half. Mika looks good. Didn't know Carlino was that good. Is he normally? Second half should be fun

Great first half... Carlino is out of control. He makes me pull my hair out but obviously he can be really good. I read all about Iowa State before the game. I'm blown away by Ejim. He's skilled. I also read Thomas was the best shooter in the freshman class. Looks like a freshman playing his first road game lol. Kane is tough but he's like Carlino and takes a lot of stupid shots and makes some bad decisions. Good luck in the second half. Go Cougs

Wow, that game was nuts! Can't believe Iowa State pulled it out at the end with that lineup. That flagrant was weird. Obviously Kane was expecting Mika to bring the ball up and then tie him up. He did not and got poked in the eyes it looked like.

Good win for the Cyclones! Both are top 25 teams

You guys were just tougher, that was the main difference to me. I think it was good for BYU to take some physical play so that they can see where they need to be in those types of games going forward. We even got to see Nate Austin get isolated at the end late in the game and he got killed again, but that Niang dude is pretty crafty. Had some really patient moves and nice touch.

Yep, that was pretty much a street fight. Both teams are very difficult to defend.

This will look good on the Cyclone resume in March, and won't look bad for BYU by any means. I'll root for the Cougars the rest of the way and keep up to date via this thread. You guys will surely contend for 1st in the WCC.

Iowa State rebounded well in the 2nd half... and BYU sucked bad at the line.
Great game, strange end.
The better team won. Nice block on Haws right at the end to seal the deal.
Iowa State was just better down the stretch.

Yep. Great block. Thomas really hurt us in the 2nd half and rebounded well too. Losing Mika hurt too. Both teams will be playing in March. Good luck with your season LazyD!

I think Mika going down was the difference. He is better than I thought he would be. Haws seemed to disappear as well. Also, the refs not giving BYU a TO there at the end didn't help anything.

Everything went wrong for BYU the last 2 mins and they were still in it. Good sign.

Mika is going to be really good. He is already. Haws was a victim of Iowa State's ability to switch on the perimeter. Perimeter defense looks like a strength for the Cyclones this year.

BYU was around the 26-30 range in most polls this week. Do you think it's possible that they actually move up after last night's game?

I could see BYU moving up depending on what happens between now and when the polls come out. Do they play again? I bet if they go out and destroy their next opponent, they move up.
