2014 College Football

Does any coach want the BYU job?
Doesn't he have to be LDS?
Very small pool of decent candidates?

I don't think Bronco goes anywhere but if he does my bet is they go hard after Sitake. A BYU alumn who happens to be a great poly recruiter. All of that is right up BYU's alley.

This is the only game highlight tape where you can clearly see whether you were blitzing or not on your big defensive plays and 80% of them were blitzes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9qsAO8_rWg

That shows all the sacks and INTs from the Mich game I believe and there was only one time you didn't blitz. And beyond that, you were QB spying, which is almost the same thing depending on the read. UCLA highlights are less clear but you can still see non-defensive lineman Utah players in the backfield on most of those sack/TFL highlights, which means you were most likely blitzing those times as well. You clearly blitz plenty. Your line is good, but you definitely are not only sending 4 linemen and getting to the QB if those two game highlights are any indication. Quite the opposite.

I've personally only seen the Washington State game in its entirety, where you didn't blitz at all really, but that just means your coaches thought it was better to play that quick release offense by staying stable in that zone, but that's not your general philosophy.
Michigan is a horrible game to use as an example. They were no threat to beat a blitz so there was little to no reason not to blitz. Against UCLA and Oregon state most of the pressure came off of straight 4 man rushes or occasional zone blitzes with only 4 guys rushing. Those teams were threats against the blitz, so they were not used as often. Utah does blitz but it's not the only way they were getting pressure. In the OSU game the announcer repeatedly complimented the Utes on being able to disrupt the QB while only sending 3-4 guys. They got a lot of the sacks against UCLA the same way.
.
Also judging just on big defensive plays only is a bit naïve. A lot of teams make a majority of their big defensive plays on well timed blitzes. It does not mean that they are blitzing a majority of the time but just that they are timing them well enough to get big plays on them.

I know Duck thinks it's gonna be a blowout but I was surprised to see Vegas has this game as a pick 'em. I don't gamble but those Vegas guys rarely miss the mark by that much. I was stunned that USC wasn't a ten point favorite.

I still feel like USC is gonna be mighty tough for Utah to beat but as the game gets closer, I find myself feeling like Utah has a chance. I really like how bad USC has been on kick return coverage. They may choose to kick it out of bounds all night but if they don't, Clay could be the ultimate X factor in this game. I also think if Utah sticks to pounding the ball, the 3rd and 4th qtrs could wear down that amazing front 7 of USC's.

That being said, it's still going to take Utah's best effort of the year for then to win.
Agree with this

Agreed. Utah definitely has a chance. USC isn't that good and Utah, especially at home can do some things. Booker is a badass.

Agreed.

Let's hope BYU upsets Boise and Cal so Bronco saves his job. I don't know of one UTE fan who wants to see Bronco go.
Not a single fan of any in state school wants Bronco to go anywhere. Lets not forget BYU owned Utah State before Bronco became head coach.

I'm not seeing the O-line problems anybody is talking about and I've watched every SC game. They're a young Oline so they make bad protection reads sometimes, but Kessler doesn't have 18 tds and only 1 int......and Buck Allen doesn't have 900 yards on the ground.... if they have big issues there. Kessler has all day most of the game. He takes naps inbetween snaps. Running holes are big. We'll see, but "stout" is the better way to describe them right now to me.

One thing I do like about Utah over the years is that they'll copy whatever works on defense. They don't just say....this is our set in stone defense that we're going to use against every type of offense.......and if we out execute them we're going to win. No....they say....TCU whooped up on Air Force by playing like this.....so we'll run similar things. And they usually mimic well.

Personally, I wouldn't be shocked if Thompson ends up starting and Utah tries to run some of that BC offense to start that game. Or least plays some series running that stuff somewhere along the line. I suppose Wilson wouldn't be horrible at it either so maybe they'll sprinkle it in here and there with him. I don't know, but it would be stupid not to try some of those sets.

BYU can lose out this year and Bronco will be back. They can go sub .500 three years in a row and Bronco isn't going anywhere, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure bigb is right on this.

On the flip side, heard this on the radio the other day and it made me crack up.

Supposed to be Whit after deciding who the next starting QB will be.

Wilson is starting. Utah announced that on Monday.

USC gives up almost 5 sacks a game.

USC is starting three freshmen OL.

USC has played three ranked teams, has won by an average of a little over 2 points. They've only played one team that can rush anywhere near as well as Utah...and lost.

They are significantly better at home than on the road.

Their special teams coverage is abysmal.

I'm not saying this is a for sure win for Utah. But, there is a reason everyone everywhere is picking Utah to win. I haven't seen anyone pick USC yet.

I'm sure you're right. BYU is probably has the strangest dynamic in the nation between their football program and their fans. The school and church know what their priorities are and that will never change. The fans want a team that competes with anybody in the nation.

I think Bronco makes himself look foolish at times by trying to serve two masters. From what it seems, he embraces the priorities handed down to him by the church owned school and because of it is held in high regard with them. But then it seems like every August he's talking about the upcoming season being the next step in the evolution of BYU football and how they expect to play for national titles, etc.

I don't know if he's just delusional enough to talk about national titles with how the current landscape is even if his employer has winning football games as 4th or 5th priority or if he's simply just done a poor job of achieving balance between the two worlds, but either way it hasn't translated very well and nobody seems more frustrated by it than a growing number of Cougar fans.
