2014 Draft Combine

Gordon had the 3rd highest vert of any PF/C prospect ever, and yet he was really disappointed with his results. He said he's tested higher than 39" before. And I believe him.

For some perspective, there were only about 5 guys in the entire DX database who were at least 6'9 250, with verticals as high or higher. Blake Griffin was 6'10" 248 with the same 35.5" vert. Randle, with his size and strength is an elite athlete.

Wow.. thats amazing.. who would have thought Randle would have the same vertical as Blake. I believe that was one of the knock against him? His lack of athleticism?

He's squarely the 5th best prospect for me now and I think there is a real chance we grab him is we drop to 5th pick.

The main complaint about Randle's athleticism has not been has lack of vert, it's how long it takes him to get off the ground. He has to really bend his knees and get down low, then jump off of two feet.

That's another thing that's so amazing about Wiggins' athletic ability. Not only does he have an unreal vertical, but he can fully utilize it in the blink of an eye. One second he's just standing there, and the next his elbows are above the rim.

The point is there is a lot more to someone's athleticism than just the numbers that are recorded at the combine. These numbers tell only a fraction of the story. You have to watch a player actually play the game to judge their athleticism.

McDermott has a higher vertical than Blake Griffin, must mean he is equally or more athletic, the combine said so.

thank you.

The most confused dudes all think that these numbers translate directly, player-for-player.

Wiggins takes a long time to get off the ground. You have to watch highlights of his alley oop ability to understand how long it takes for him to get up.

Extreme vertical is one of the most useful numbers for late first to second round players IMO, not as much so for lottery. It's one of the most neglected drafting "moneyball" strategies. I.e. Isaiah Thomas falling to dead last. I was shocked at that.

This is more of a function of Randle's low reach I think. If he had a prototypical 9' standing reach likes most PFs, could easily dunk without having to gather himself.

Nope.. it's more what spy wrote.. plagiarism. ... of what I have written many times over the past year.

That Tucker not giving credit.. figgers.

Remember when Harrison Barnes scored a huge vertical, so people thought he was really athletic, then they remembered his game didn't involve using that athletic ability, then they forgot, then they remembered again when he got to the NBA?

blake didn't have a great vertical at the combine, but many speculate he improved his vertical up to 38-39 inch. i tend to agree. dwight also improved his vert to 38-39. dude can kiss the rim, and had 12ft 6 inch max reach. he also had bad combine vert.

also big difference between randle and blake - blake is a quick jumper. randle probably isn't. blake has that unique motor. very rare.
