The cool thing about DeRozan is that his shots outside the restricted area are basically all 90s/00s shot selection. So what he does goes against the defensive instincts that players learn in practice where the emphasis is on pressuring good shooters outside and keeping guys out of the paint. That way he getts looks that are cleaner and he's somehow efficient from that area. Kinda like Wade always managed to defeat the analytics even after computer simulation found its way into the league.
A truly explosive 1st step used the right way is a very dangerous thing on a basketball court.
