2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

Chandler Parsons was a decent target around the draft when Memphis was rumored to be interested in trading down if somebody took his contract. Now, he is an awful idea unless we get a future unprotected 1st with him.

Jazz need two things:

1) A big who can shoot and playmake a bit. We're featuring Jae and Thabo, but we can do better. Ideally, we'd find someone like a younger, healthier version of Danilo Gallinari. Orlando may actually be willing to move Aaron Gordon supposedly, but they'll want a lot in return.

2) A long-term solution at PG. Maybe that's Dante, maybe not. He's at least looking more like a PG these days. If Anthony Davis leaves the Hornets this summer, the rumor is that the Jazz will go after J'rue Holliday.

Present something better then.
Almost anyone on the league. Even guys like Wayne Ellington are low risk/low reward. At least role players like those can still play (some) and have a bit of value. But you don't pay 25M a year for guy whose career is over.

and btw, i'm not proposing an Ellington trade. But you ask me for an example of something better, so....

Jazz have two stars, decent role players, future cap space and three solid contracts that can be used for trade purposes. They shouldn’t be taking on bad contracts for assets. They shouldn’t sacrifice future cap flexibility for middling win-now moves.

They biggest problem the Jazz face is a lack of meaningful assets to tip the scales in their favor over other teams. Unless a disgruntled star forced his way out at the deadline OR a surprise deal comes out of nowhere. . . the Jazz should not make a major trade at the deadline. They need a star that tips the scales in their favor.

Most major trades happen in the offseason. Favors and Exum together would still provide a solid foundation for matching salaries without having to take on a bad contract. The tricky part is coming up with quality assets that move the needle. Allen, Bradley and future picks probably isn’t enough - unless Exum blows up and looks like a focal point in a major trade.

If they strike out on a trade leading up to the draft, they should keep the flexibility to chase a max free agent and try to find their third star that way. That (IMO) is a distant 3rd to trading for someone or trading up in the draft. I feel like they missed the boat by focusing on Hayward, Hill and Rubio instead of going after Paul George or Jimmy Butler these past two years.

I think Parsons had a bit of an injury bug but if a few years on the shelf is a career ender than I guess we should have cut Dante, right?

If Parsons was making $8M/year then it may be a reasonable reclamation project. But the dude is owed more than $50M. You could find something of his caliber for $5M somewhere. The only reason to take him specifically, rather than anyone else, is if we’re getting something else in the package for taking his contract.

Our window is right now. We have too many guys on the verge of potential massive decline (Crowder, Ingles, Korver, Rubio, Thabo, Udoh, and maybe even Favors and Gobert if they suffered an injury).

In my opinion, we look for the best deal we can get for:

Thabo, Udoh, Neto, Niang, and picks

That's potentially $12.5 million in contracts we can send out. We just need to use those to get another playoff caliber contributor or asset. I'm not sold on trading Favors or Rubio unless we get somebody really good. Definitely wouldnt trade Exum.

WTF? Parsons is still owed that much? He was signed for another huge contract after he spent most of his RFA contract injured?

Not Udoh IMO - trade Bradley as part of a deal and keep Ekpe for a similar salary to what he’s getting right now.

If we can get a star in the door and it only costs us some combination of Favors, Rubio or Exum. . . we should jump on it. Love those guys, but I don’t see any of them tipping the scales.

I would LOVE to get Gordon and holiday

Hell yes. Rubio, X, and favors are all guys I wouldn't hesitate to trade.

If we trade Favors, I agree we need to keep Udoh. I just feel that Udoh's $3+ expiring will help a deal more than Bradley's smaller, longer deal.

If we can get a star, I would trade Favors and Rubio and even Exum although I don't want to trade Exum.

Jrue hasn't really played PG in the last two years and he's had arguably the best years of his career because of it, I'm not 100% sold on him being an answer at PG without Mitchell showing some ability to be able to create/play make for others on a consistent basis. Like, the Jazz could bring Jrue in and he would be fine at PG, but to really make sure Jrue is close to reaching the value of his contract he needs to be able to play as a secondary playmaker at times. Maybe Ingles plays point forward more, not really sure.
