2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

Our window is right now. We have too many guys on the verge of potential massive decline (Crowder, Ingles, Korver, Rubio, Thabo, Udoh, and maybe even Favors and Gobert if they suffered an injury).

In my opinion, we look for the best deal we can get for:

Thabo, Udoh, Neto, Niang, and picks

That's potentially $12.5 million in contracts we can send out. We just need to use those to get another playoff caliber contributor or asset. I'm not sold on trading Favors or Rubio unless we get somebody really good. Definitely wouldnt trade Exum.

What? Why would Crowder, Rubio, Udoh and/or Gobert be on the verge of massive decline? All are 28 years of age or younger.

I said Gobert if he were to get injured. Regardless, the point was being made that their prime is now. It is highly unlikely that any of the guys I listed get substantially better from this point on minus maybe Gobert.

We need to maximize their current primes.

Yes but their massive decline shouldn’t be for a good 4-6 years.

You are describing every player with the right injury, lol. So, why not lump the entire team in that category, c’mon LoPo.
Man people must be having a hostile New Years. Everybody just wants to nitpick.

Translation - our team is full of guys in their prime. Most importantly, most our "prime" guys aren't specialists outside of Gobert, Ingles and Korver. So once they lose a step, they aren't that valuable (mainly Thabo, Udoh, Favors, Rubio, Crowder). We should look to build around this moment with a deal before the deadline.

Tear it down is what you mean.

The core centrepieces on the Jazz are 26 and 22 years old, there's no rush. Ingles is the only guy out of the ones you listed that I would be slightly concerned by, but he has an old man type game anyway so it's hard to see him really falling off a cliff for another 3 - 5 years yet. The rest of the guys, while maybe important to this years squad, aren't vital to the Jazz' success in the long term as it isn't as difficult to find replacements starting PGs/rotation wings/etc than it is to replace a DPOTY and an All Star caliber offensive talent on a rookie deal.

edit: Mitchell is actually only 22 not 23, my bad

Hardaway is one of the worst defenders in the NBA. I just dont see the Jazz wanting to add him. Yeah, he brings some scoring, but he's going to use a lot of possessions to do that. He's a terrible fit next to Mitchell.

I dont see the Jazz looking at him at all.

He also is dealing with Plantar Facitis issues... if he was completely healthy and still playing anything near where he was to start the season I could see some interest. He’s not a good defender but I don’t think he’s one of the worst.

Tim is a no go. I could see us having more interest in Lee and other assets at this point, but we won’t compromise our cap position for such a mild upgrade unless they think Frank or Dotson are something super special that is worth the risk. Frank is a guy I’d take a risk on if we didn’t have Exum and if DM was shooting better but he’s not a fit at all imo.

Break that down for me. Name some teams that won titles after their best players turned 30. Miami? Nope. Cleveland? Kyrie and Love nope. Golden State? Nope. San Antonio? Nope. What are you babbling about Cy?

Mavs: That team was a bunch of old farts
Cleveland: James was 32
Spurs: Last two rings came with Duncan and Ginobili above 30 (1st ring came with an over 30 Robinson/Johnson/Elliot/Kerrr)
Bulls: Last 3 rings came with their core over 30
Lakers: Their 2-peat in the Gasol era came with Kobe/Gasol/Artest/Odom over 30
Celtics: KG/Allen/Pierce all over 30
Heat: 1st ring of Wade era came with an over 30 Shaq
Rockets: 2-peat with Hakeem/Drexler/Thorpe over 30

I think the sense of urgency comes from the fact that team building will be easier while DM is on a rookie deal and Rudy on a mini max. Adding that third piece is more likely/easier within the next two years
Plus the fact that contracts are shorter than they were in yesteryear and there's a huge shifting precedent of moving franchises. We had Karl and John together for 18 years. That's unfathomable at this point.
