As someone who leans right, I sure hope the Republicans are watching this dumpster fire of a process and figure out a better way to do it in 2024. I don’t see any way any of these people beat Trump in the next election unless the economy tanks.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens when Biden debates Warren/Biden. He's held his ground pretty well against Kamala tonight.
Inslee impressed the most out of the lower tier candidates on the stage tonight. He's probably the most zeroed in on the biggest issue facing the world, which is of course climate change. Yang was good as well, while I'm not sure UBI is the answer to everything, he's right in that we are too late to completely ward off some of the devastating effects of global warming and we need to realize that.

If you had the power to narrow the next debate down to five, which five would you keep and why?

Warren--she's my favorite pick out of the field. She's got a long record of fighting on behalf of the working middle class and is a great communicator.
Sanders- I supported him in the last Democratic primary against Hillary Clinton, again his primary focus has long been on fighting for workers
Castro- Probably the best among the group on immigration reform.
Biden- Arguably the most electable, especially if you subscribe to the theory that democrats need to woo centrist voters to win.
Williamson- For the lulz.
In the end I think it will come down to Biden and either Warren or Sanders, I'll gladly pull the lever for each.

As an independent voter, based on what I’ve seen, I’d keep these five and jettison the rest.
Biden - Joe is probably most electable, but I worry about his ability to take on Trump directly. He’s been bleeding since he got into the race. Tonight was better, but still not great for him.
Sanders - Has energy of the left, but I think he’s crazy as a loon and his yelling old-man socialist schtick is already past annoying.
Warren - The top policy wonk, but comes off as disingenuous to me. Her and Bernie are going to have to start fighting for the progressive vote, and I’m curious to see how that goes. I’m not sure Bernie bows out quietly if he loses to either Warren or Biden.
Gabbard - I tend to give vets extra leeway to earn my vote. Like her better than Mayor Pete, but still have some major concerns. Liked the takedown of Harris tonight. Showed she has some fight in her.
Williamson - Call this the “Wild Card” factor. I actually like her. Think she’s funny and far more self aware than most people get credit for. Kudos to her for getting the attention. Hope she gets a bump. I like Yang for similar reasons, but he seems to have less depth and is a one trick pony.

I like a lot about Gabbard as well, pretty much came down to a coin flip between her Castro and Yang, who like you said is a bit shallow as far as his messaging goes.
Williamson is incredibly entertaining, and I like her personality enough. But I just can't get behind her kookiness. Her stances on things like antidepressants, GMO's and Vaccines are troubling to me.
Watching her go toe to toe with Trump would make for good TV that's for sure.
Trump is a great white, attacking steel cages and **** but still getting respect. We need someone who can get out of the cage and outsmart/out swim Trump.
Joe is way too old and feeble to handle a great white.
Warren might be a great white whisperer but I see her getting angry at the great white and being cast as bitchy/whiny.
Sanders will come off as the senile guy on the dock who used to have a boat acting like he can battle the great white.
Gabbard might be tough for the great white to insult, harrass, etc.
Booker looks like he can swim.
Castro looks like he could confuse the great white.
Buttigieg is too smart to get in the water, he'll drop depth charges.
Harris will go down in the cage but actually get out of the cage to attempt to speargun the great white.

I disagree with the takes on Williamson. every second she’s allowed to debate I hear another pillar of democracy crashing to the ground. Not joking.
She’s such a clown that I feel she does harm to our country, to people’s perception of our government, and cheapens the entire democratic process.
I know we all love a circus. Circuses get ratings. But I’d hope that the world’s oldest democracy would take the election of its executive leader more seriously.

One thing I don’t understand, why don’t the parties host and moderate the debates and invite news agencies to watch? I think asking a candidate to answer a question in 45 seconds that would take hours to fully explain isn’t informative at all.
Because news agencies are moderating these debates, they’re really only asking loaded questions and giving candidates just enough time to answer so that the news agency gets a hot sound byte they can replay for the next 24 hours.
The goal of these debates shouldn’t be to get ratings or sound bytes, but to inform the public.
Hell, I’d be happy if PBS just did all of the debates.

It highlights why our elections are always such a **** show. CNN basically just tried to make the whole thing into a sporting event. No wonder the discourse is in the gutter and entertainers like Trump have success.
Debates should be on PBS or CSPAN imo.
