Obama cyber chief confirms 'stand down' order against Russian cyberattacks in summer 2016

The comments by Michael Daniel, who served as White House “cyber security coordinator” between 2012 and January of last year, provided his first public confirmation of a much-discussed passage in the book, “Russian Roulette: The Inside Story of Putin’s War on America and the Election of Donald Trump,” co-written by this reporter and David Corn, that detailed his thwarted efforts to respond to the Russian attack.

I’ve read this book. It’s a fine one. Have you read it?

Says nothing about Russian interference in 2012.

Regardless, that wasn't my point. I'm still trying to find my sources but for now I'll take the loss on that one. You're literally saying "I actually hope this happens(foreign interference). Democrats receiving help via foreign assistance is the only way to convince republicans that we need to pass election security".

First off, that's pretty extreme. Second neither party did anything while given the opportunity. In your opinion why didn't Obama get this stopped? 2012 or not this entire thing was under his watch.

What is your point? This was your post:

When did we learn about meddling? We've known since 2012 at least and did nothing. Why do you think that is? Shouldn't we have stopped it there?

Why wasn't it stopped where it was originated? That's what I'm asking, 2012 or not. I understand the confusion, my bad.

Who knows why it wasnt stopped. Lets focus on the present though since the past cannot be changed.

I don't know that it could be stopped. Do you know what Obama should have done to stop it? Do you have any theories on why he would not stop it if he could?

And let me say something here. JazzyFresh has been asking a simple question. No one is starting there. Everyone seems to be jumping three assumptions ahead and responding to that and not to what JazzyFresh is actually saying.

I'm sure that's been frustrating. I mean if someone is trying to have an actual discussion then step back and have the discussion. No?

I think both are important and what I'm asking is completely logical but I get what you're saying.

I agree with many Democrats who have said he should've done more. He told his cyber security to stand down and instead he gave nothing more than a stern warning that stopped little to nothing. He didn't act no matter how you put it.

Another theory that is not mine and has been hinted by his own staff and party is that he did so little because of the implications it would have on the Iran deal. He absolutely needed Russia.

Personally I think he underestimated Russias threat and both above are true in one way or the other.. I'm hoping something is being done right now but by the sound and look of things nobody in the current office seems to care either.

Or maybe meddling really isn't as big of a deal as we think? When you put out Tweedledum and Tweedledee out as candidates, one of the two had to win.

I dunno

I think the biggest difference might be that Obama cared but didn't do enough to stop it.

Trump actively encourages and wants Russia to get involved in our elections and befriends Putin and talks about him like a buddy.

If JazzyFresh is trying to have an actual discussion I'm sure it's the first time. His history as a poster is exactly why he's getting the response he is.

Edit. Nevermind, I got him mixed up with Jazzrule.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but a big reason why Obama didn't publicize the meddling by Russia or do more to stop it is he was warned by GOP politicians (McConnell) that if he did they'd accuse him of trying to interfere on behalf of Clinton and call the entire election into question.

He, like most of the rest of us figured Hillary would win and the whole mess could be sorted out after the election. That was a blunder for sure, and he should have been more proactive in fighting against it. But it's hard to say what the consequences of that would have been.

Care to elaborate? I don't talk much, if any politics here. If you're talking about my post in the Jazz part, I'm generally curious what my history is viewed as. I don't even know who you are tbh.

Except, it’s already been explained as nauseam why.

It’s pretty frustrating to answer questions only to have people ignore them.

Yes. It’s been mentioned already back in post 686. But apparently we need to answer Jazzyfresh’s questions 10 times for him to understand.
