2020 Presidential election

Looks like there are some folks who have heard about the book "1984" but haven't bothered to read it.
I think this is stemming from HBO pulling Gone With the Wind from their streaming platform, which is funny because that movie is basically revisionist civil war propaganda.

The depiction of Mammie in that movie is yikes.

Speaking of how Hollywood in the 30s and 40s reinforced racism, Judy Garland says, “Hi!”

I love Judy. I have stills of Judy in my house (also, confirmed bachelor). Yes Judy did blackface: frequently. I have on multiple occasions been watching movies at home and had it suddenly turn into blackface Judy in the final scene and kind of ruin my evening. I have seen Judy in blackface so many times I can differentiate between her various accents as Mr. Bones and more light skinned "Dixie Beauty" personas with my eyes closed

Blackface is an unfortunate and inescapable part of the history of American entertainment. It shows up in vaudeville and throughout early cinema, in large part because it was an attempt by Jewish performers to ally themselves with white audiences by emphasizing the degree of their own non-blackness.

You can't do any serious study of musical films produced in the United States without running into it constantly. My personal favorite example is the Marx Brothers Film "A Day at the Races" in which the Brothers are running from gangsters who want to beat them up and try to hide by putting wagon grease on their faces to obscure their race. Perpetual dunce Harpo only paints half his face - blowing up the ruse and making a farce of the boys cover. This leads into a true celebration of black music of the period.

Blackface's history is more complicated than just straight "racism" in these early films, in part because of the interaction between what Jewish performers thought white audiences wanted. Ultimately it became a way for one oppressed group to gain favor with the dominant majority at the expense of another minority. Judy was a theater kid effectively from birth (the Beyonce of the Gumm sisters) and is all caught up in that process more than she seems to have had any specific antipathy.

I received my mail-in Democratic party ballot last night. Unlike many of my unaffiliated friends, I did not switch to Republican so that I could vote in the governor's race. I was unsure of what would be on my ballot and was pleased to see that there are two Democrats in a primary for Rob Bishop's Congressional seat. It's impressive when you get one Democrat in a race in Utah, much less two.

Can someone explain to me why we have military bases named for Generals of an Army that fought and killed American soldiers. And lost badly.

I thought we liked winners. And Americans. And patriots. I'm confused.
