2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

Stylistically, yeah. The only question I'd have is whether Springer can play up. We can at least imagine Grimes as something of a Royce O'Neale/Miye Oni type (or at least toggle up to SF in certain situations). But Grimes is already at the lower edge of the height/wingspan for this hope. Springer's an inch shorter (I'm not counting on him growing).
He's a quarter of an inch less long in total wingspan with 2'' lower on the standing reach. Springer has a bigger frame at a younger age. I think they should be able to play about the same size. Both going to be undersized as wing defenders and will have to be able to play tight on bigger players to disrupt them.

Ummm . . . it sure could be.
This past offseason especially would be really hard to beat. The prior offseason was at least okay on paper (I liked the Conley trade, and liked the Ed Davis and Jeff Green signings in theory). But last year:

(1) traded down in the draft to pick a center that would have been available in the middle of the second round, getting bamboozled by the Knicks in the process and passing on at least two dudes that everyone was screaming for them to draft that could’ve helped in the Clippers series;
(2) offloading a bunch picks to undo prior decisions that did not pan out;
(3) paying a backup center the full MLE after drafting a center (using our two most valuable offseason assets on true 5s when we have Gobert on the roster);
(4) messing up the math so we’re in the tax;
(5) sending a pick for Matt freaking Thomas (that was the deadline, but still).

Locking down Don and Rudy was important, but we overpaid Rudy and conceded the player option to Don.

It would be really hard to beat that. That’s the kind of offseason that gets a lead executive fired even with a No. 1 seed.

I have the feeling that the Favs signing and the Matty Ice trades were political decisions and not basketball ones.

I think it’s more likely we draft a PG than a wing. The biggest reason is there is more PG quality where we are drafting than wing quality. Ayo, McBride, etc. IMO, the alternative is reaching for a wing like Jones.

I’d rather Ayo or McBride than Jones at 30. If we want Jones, we should trade back and get an asset out of it, maybe a second for next year when we currently have no picks? And I am fine if Jones is the guy, I just don’t think you draft him at 30.

ESPN's new mock draft looks pretty good. I'd bet it's fairly accurate compared to some others. I'll post a few snippets. If the Jazz could actually pull off getting Jaden Springer at #30, I'd be pretty stoked. He's a lottery-caliber athlete, imo.

Top 10
  1. Cade (Det)
  2. Green (Hou)
  3. Mobley (Cle)
  4. Suggs (Tor)
  5. Barnes (Orl)
  6. Bouknight (Okc)
  7. Kuminga (GSW)
  8. Moody (Orl)
  9. Wagner (Sac)
  10. Giddey (NOLA)
15. Trey Murphy (Was)

26. Josh Primo (Den)

30. Jaden Springer (Uta)

Don't ask me about it. I think at some point I had Raiquan in 3 spots. That was hella more exhausting than I thought it would be. Gotta keep a running one for next year. Late second round is so fluid.

Edit: I think I also edited 3 times after posting this.

Bleacher Report saying Jazz are willing to move Joe Ingles to clear space to re-sign Conley. I guess that means the Jazz have gotten a positive sign from Conley that he wants to come back.

"The Utah Jazz are known to be one of the few teams actually searching to move playoff-tested talent. Retaining Mike Conley is an offseason priority, sources said, and the Jazz have held numerous discussions with teams around the league about offloading salary to create room for Conley in free agency."
"League personnel most often mention Joe Ingles as the Jazz wing to watch, and Bojan Bogdanovic and Royce O'Neale are also considered available for trade as Utah narrows its focus towards building a contender around Donovan Mitchell. The Jazz are also open to discuss trading their No. 30 pick, sources said."

Sell Joe to keep Mike when we don't have to pay as much?

So Mike might end up costing us more than originally thought.....

I think I agree here. Will have to see what's available when we're on the clock, but right now it looks like choosing a PG/combo guard at #30 is likelier to be successful than a wing.

Eventually, yes.

Right after we got the #1 seed and injuries derailed a promising season? I didn't expect that.

I did… I think I even started a thread for when budget cuts come. Was kinda shocked to hear all the “they will run it back and worry about cost the following year” chatter. I honestly can’t see Mike being super happy with us moving on from Joe so we can pay him more.

Don't ask me about it.
At the risk of running afoul of you here: I take it that this is just a plain big board, rather than a big board designed with the Jazz in mind. Would you make any major changes in the Jazz's region of the draft if you're thinking of who you'd prioritize for the Jazz?
