What's new

2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

I did… I think I even started a thread for when budget cuts come. Was kinda shocked to hear all the “they will run it back and worry about cost the following year” chatter. I honestly can’t see Mike being super happy with us moving on from Joe so we can pay him more.
I know we discuss pretty much every angle of every thing that could happen, but I never thought we would be in salary shedding mode at all this summer. Favors? Sure. He's a 15mpg guy. We drafted Doke.

Royce?
Joe?
Bojan?
With our new rich owner trying to set the tone early for his role over the franchise?

Never saw this coming. Hopefully it's just a smokescreen

This is either a subtly great answer or your sarcasm meter needs a little tuning. I'm choosing Door #1.

Ayo is 6'5" (in shoes) with a 6'10" wingspan. He's got enough size and athleticism to guard 1-3. He's a decent north-south athlete.

Oh, I guess you're thinking that Miles McBride doesn't have size/athleticism. Hence the post I responded to was being cynical. McBride is a good defender though, with good athleticism. He's a reasonable 3rd/4th guard.

I wonder if the Jazz view Elijah Hughes as a rotation player next year, enough so that he would factor into the Jazz's draft decisions this year.

At the risk of running afoul of you here: I take it that this is just a plain big board, rather than a big board designed with the Jazz in mind. Would you make any major changes in the Jazz's region of the draft if you're thinking of who you'd prioritize for the Jazz?
Haha, it's fine. It's a plain big board, I thought about doing one based on Jazz but that would be too specific, just wanted mine out there.

It's hard to gauge how the draft will go but if available I think Jazz would/should go Trey Murphy, Miles Mcbride, Butler, Duarte, Dosunmu, Vrenz, Christopher or trade back for Kessler Edwards or Quentin Grimes. I don't think Nah'shon Hyland would be on the board. Gotta see how the draft shakes out. Not a lot of change I guess.

I highly doubt it. If they thought he was anywhere close to being a rotation player they would have found more minutes for him last season. Even in garbage time he was often one of the last ones to get into the game.

He was so deep in the dog house you wonder why he was even drafted unless it was a DL/Quin toxic power move.

I think the post you responded to was being sarcastic, yes. As Cy mentioned earlier, McBride's (wingspan) length is decent, so maybe McBride's lack of size is overstated.

Jazz big board

Semi-plausible players who we could trade up for. You all can determine the cost.
  1. Scottie Barnes. The big, athletic forward we all have been looking for.
  2. Davion Mitchell. Perimeter defense and playmaking skills.
  3. Keon Johnson. Perimeter defense, shooting.

And I still hold out hope we can somehow draft Jared Butler at 30.

Tony Jones seems to imply that his intel indicates that the Jazz are unlikely to go for Thor if he's available (starts discussing what the Jazz are likely to be doing at about 30:00 mark on this podcast):

Likeliest pick to TJ seems to be Grimes, though implies that there's many ways things could fall. Says Jazz also quite like Dosunmu and (maybe especially) McBride though chances of them being on the board at #30 are lower.

The Grimes train! All aboard! He tore it up on day 2 of the nba combine scrimmages with 27 pts and 7 3 pointers. I wouldn't be surprised if they traded up for him.

I'd be very surprised if they traded up for him. I doubt they have the assets/appetite to trade up this year. I think the likelihood of picking him is dependent on the fact that he's the likeliest of the guys they really like to be there at 30, not necessarily that he's someone they'd feel they need to go get.

Garuba closed out on top of the key, followed the pass and closed out on left corner and went to the right corner to contest the shot. Not a single step lost between rotations.

He blocked Yuta Watanabe's 3 pt shot a few possessions earlier as well.

Garuba is still underrated in this draft, imo. Really high floor as a defender and ball mover. Good finisher on rolls. Just needs to knock down corner 3s. Reminds me a bit of a young, aggressive Paul Millsap. I'll go ahead and say that I think it's probable Garuba will be a more impactful pro than Kuminga. No way the Jazz don't love this guy.

Seems like the hype on Thor is dying down a bit.

Two separate articles I read today ( will link below) have him as a late 30's pick.

I really liked him on the surface... then you start diving deeper and there are some concerns... I still like him overall though. I just can't see a guy named Thor failing... but Thon Maker is also a great name and he failed so who knows.

These assholes went behind a paywall.. they have nothing worth being behind a paywall... who they got us taking?
