2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I really dont get calling KOC for this. If he was a dude milking his board and updating it weekly for clicks it'd be one thing, but he is putting out a monthly ranking. A lot can change month to month.
I actually undersold my point. He has THREE players in the lottery conversation that weren’t even on his radar a month ago (two of whom have been firmly on others’ radars well before that).

KOC was basically the Ringer's replacement for Zach Lowe after he went to ESPN. KOC has been following the draft for years before he got to the Ringer. He isnt just a draft guy, but he is definitely the draft guy on The Ringer.

I like KOC a lot and think he's one of the better draft people. Not that I agree with everything he says, but I think his reasonings and process are better than most.
I agree with most of what you’re saying which is why I’m bemoaning what appears to be rather obvious and substantial slippage to me.

The space he occupies is that between an expert and an analyst. I don’t think he’s very much like Simmons at all who is mostly a writer/comic that loves basketball history.

I guess I never took him that seriously. In my head he was always Kevin O'Compliment (I swear that's a real thing people say) because he just compliments everyone is and SUPER nice about everything and anything. He's like an overload of positivity. I like listening to him and Chris Herring, and that podcast is definitely just two guys at the bar mucking it up and not some expert analysis.

Oh, and Gortman had a 39 inch vertical at the combine to go with a 6'10 wingspan and obvious natural talent. Might be a bit too rich at 28 for most, but his talent is huge. Had that really intriguing intersection of talent and being obviously raw while still being able to produce that makes you dream big. At moments looked like the best player on the court, but had some bad decision making stretches that showed his youth.

I thought the other OTE dude looked pretty damn good too. Really stood out in transition more than probably any other player across the 4 games.

Here's a good breakdown on all the prospects that played and I mostly echo everything said: https://www.noceilingsnba.com/p/2023-nba-g-league-elite-camp-stock

No Ceilings had a section of their podcast today dedicated to Klintman. They are high on him as well. They arent directly comping him to Giannis, but they think there are a lot of similarities (and I agree).

They love his size/ball-handling/passing combo and his late growth spurt has them excited. Both said first round definitely and agreed on somewhere in the 20's, but could be higher if he shows well (which is now impossible because he isnt showing anymore to teams).

KOC’s latest big board update:

Black at 6
Hendricks at 7
Whitmore at 9
Bufkin at 10
Klintman at 14
Miller at 15
Bilal at 17

We get Cam? ****ing awesome

Interesting rumor from Rafael Barlowe on today's podcast. Said that Gortman's OTE team and the Twin's team had a preseason game and Gortman's team won which prompted OTE to move some players between the two teams to strengthen the Twin's team. He stressed that this was just a rumor he heard and he hasnt properly sourced it, so take with a grain of salt, but the overarching point was that OTE put so much of their time/effort into promoting the Twins that Gortman slid under the radar more than he should have for being such a highly ranked player.

where was Gortman ranked coming out of HS? was he a top 50 kid?

According to ESPN he was top 5 and the top 5 all had the same rating grade. (Dillon MItchell, Derrick Lively, Dariq Whitehead, Nick Smith being the other 4)
good grief - i generally pay attention to that stuff and knew of all those other guys, but don't remember him at all - don't remember seeing him in the McD's AA game or anything. but yeah, if he was ranked that high coming out and played well in OTE, that's a guy to watch.

The thing is once he declares to OTE they remove him off the list, so it's easy to miss him.

Why would we take Cam in the top-3?

You had cam at 9 i thought. Isnt that where the jazz are currently slotted (pre lottery)?

Or were you making the joke that we will win the lottery

If the Jazz can package picks and move up to #13, they should be able to get their choice of Keyonte George, Kobe Bufkin and possibly Cason Wallace. OKC at #12 isn't expected to take a guard. ORL could take Wallace at #11, but they also like Dick allegedly.

Jazz really need some young, on-ball talent.
