2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I think Scoot is becoming underrated. If we traded Lauri for him I would understand it. There are reasons why you’d do that.
there are reasons why one would do that. absolutely. that doesn't mean you, i or Ainge would actually pull the trigger as there may be more and/or better reasons why you wouldn't do it.

I agree... its weird he seems to have lost so much shine.

I think if you do that its to reset the timeline and build around Scoot/Walker/whoever we draft. I don't see us doing it but we'd have to have a meeting if offered. I like the idea of throwing 9 and a handful of picks at Portland to see if we can get it done. Portland has some things working against them if they want to do a win now deal... they don't have the salary to send out unless its Simmons or Nurkic... I'm just not sure they are prepared to capitalize on this and may end up just punting and taking Scoot.

Reset the timeline right before Lauri is due a huge extension essentially. If Lauri is on the team we are on Lauri’s timeline.

Nurkic would be enough plus he is a net negative I think so that would sweeten the deal more for them.

to me it's weird that Scoot was given so much shine in the first place. do people understand what this league is about? it's about length and shooting. Scoot is a short guy who can't shoot. that doesn't mean he can't become a good shooter or that he can't overcome his height with strength, athleticism and defense and be a damn good player, but just the fact that he HAS to overcome those things puts him behind the 8 ball from the start and makes his risk/reward that early in the draft disproportionate. odds are against him. it's a fact that it's really difficult for a little guy who can't shoot to have superstar impact. Westbrook is bigger than Scoot, but even he, ultimately was limited in his ability to win at the highest level for those reasons. and i didn't even mention the fact that his actual production was very much underwhelming as well. so besides being a short dude who can't shoot, he just hasn't been that good in his two post HS seasons.

When you look at the legit superstars in the league, its a bunch of dudes that are 6'7"+ and Steph - the greatest shooter ever. Scoot's archetype just makes it extremely difficult to have that major impact you expect from a top 2 overall pick. The best little guys like Mitchell, Ja, Trae, etc, those guys can put up numbers, but they are always going to be on the outside looking in in terms of being the best guy on a championship team and in terms of being one of the top 5-7 players in the league.

They'd spend top 10 picks in back-to-back years looking for a defensive guard to play next to Beal.
Yeah, I'm not seeing anything that says giving up on Johny Davis because you draft Black.

Davis sucked, and probably will continue to suck based on historical evidence of his level of suckage, but if he was amazing that wouldn't change if you draft Black or not IMO.

And if you trade him you buy yourself a couple more years of hoarding assets. If you believe in this organization's ability to turn those assets into stuff then that might be the way to go even if it's hard to.

Plus we keep our pick for the next 1-2 years.

I really would explore trading for #3. Our best shot would be a team trading a player that Portland wants to them and we supplement that team with picks.

It's hard to find a scenario where another team gives up a star player and somehow the Jazz get to #3. Maybe there's a klugey example where KAT gets to Portland, the Blazers also get #9 from Utah, Utah gets #3, and Minnesota gets a couple of their picks back. Utah could take salary back from Portland.

I still think a boring yet prudent thing to do would be to move back to 12 if they will give our 2024 pick back. I'd try and move up first and if Walker fell to 9 I think we could actually get more than that... but maybe ensures they get their guy.
Man... that is a tough thing to think through. 12 is obviously just outside the consensus top-11 so that's rough, but getting the pick back would be HUGE.

If Hendricks/Whitmore/Ausar aren't there at #9 then I'd think about it. If I believe Wallace/Black/Grady are at #12 I probably do it.

The counter point on Lauri is he just looked like prime Dirk minus passing but plus defense... and I could see him staying here for like 8 years as an AS. Even if he is more spendy and prevents us from getting high picks.

I don't think I would do it. We have enough in the cupboard to get #3 with picks if we really love Scoot.

Absolutely not. Lauri for scoot is laughable. Please dont suggest this anymore its offensive to lauri and true jazz fanz everywhere

I didn’t say absolutely do it. It’s worth a discussion. Please bring actual substance to the conversation instead of stupid claims.

Plus I guarantee you Portland fans are saying the same thing but opposite of what we think. They think we’d have to add with Lauri.
