2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I think Hendricks can/will be a shot blocker in the NBA, but there's a lot of space between being a shot blocker and being the very best shot blocker. He's a good shot blocker, but we don't compare someone his is good with the very best when it comes to any other skill. You wouldn't compared good shooters to Curry, great passers to Jokic etc.

I think Lauri makes more sense. The size+shooting combo is a similarity and I think they will be similar level rim protectors/off ball defenders.....but I also don't love that comparison because Lauri is also probably the best in the league at creating shots around the basket in the half court as a half court player. Hendricks will be great in transition and dunk everything....but I don't see him being close to Lauri's level as an off ball player in the half court. Honestly, I'm struggling to think of anyone who is even close to Lauri in the first place, so this isn't a dig. It's just that Lauri is so unique in this regard. Maybe MPJ?

I think part of the appeal with Hendricks is that he is unique, and thus doesn't have many great comparisons. The size, shooting, and athleticism doesn't come around too often. This is kind of a weird one, but an early comparison I saw was Jeff Green. If Jeff Green started his career in this era and not in the stone ages, I could see it.
i promise hendricks won't be known as a shot blocker in the league - let's measure that by averaging 1.5 bpg for at least 2 seasons. if I'm wrong i'll buy you a burger - if you're not annoying you can even make it a meal (but it won't happen so i can be as generous as i want).

Its going to be so fun to see Taylor go for 18/8/2 on good efficiency and then have you talk about him missing a ft in the 3rd quarter that cost us the game and call him a scrub.
oh, this is guaranteed to happen

Well, I would take the under on 1.5 as well lol. I was thinking about 1.0 blocks per game lol. There's only about 30 guys who are >1 block per game.

But also, JJJ is a big and Hendricks is a forward. I’m not offended by the idea of Hendricks being something like the JJJ of forwards in that he will block a lot of shots for his position(s) but he will not have the luxury of being camped at the rim so much.

He helps negate the strategy of using switches to draw Kessler away from the rim though. . .

I think Hendricks has low BBIQ, particularly as far as an NBA person is concerned, and thus will be exploited and put in positions offensively and defensively where wrong decisions will be made and he'll be a negative player as a result.

right and there are probably fewer than 30 guys who are known as shot blockers. to be a "shot blocker", 1.5 is actually a pretty low threshold.

I am the #1 Bilal hater on the board but if he’s the pick I will unequivocally become his biggest fan. I am a ****ing homer once you are on our team you are the guy.
Yup. Gotta save up some money for my Anthony Black jersey if he is the pick.

Listening to Jim Rome on my lunch break and he is ripping a Brandon Miller interview where he calls Paul George the GOAT. Pretty funny.

Well when I said I think he can/will block shots I was thinking about 1 per game. Gobert and Jarrett Allen don't even meet the 1.5 threshold.

Why do you think that though? Poor interviews? teammates or coaches talking **** about him? Dumb stuff off the court? Any evidence to support the opinion?

Its just odd to me that people are acting like Hendricks is something unique. PJ Washington exist. John Collins exist. Jabari Smith exist. Patrick Williams exist. Christian Wood exist.

And that's just accounting for the successful guys in this mold. There are plenty in the same mold who havent done much in the NBA.

i agree that he'll block shots. like i said earlier, in the way lauri blocks shots. also, gobert straight trash protecting the rim last year, but he averaged 2+ every other year of his career (besides his rookie year when he never played).

PEople should be allowed to like players other than Lebron, Kobe or Jordan.

I saw an interview where Miller was talking **** about MJ and I loved it.

not to mention the idea that it has any bearing whatsoever on how good he can become is hilarious. also, it's very likely he was trolling. which makes me like him even more.
