What's new

4 of the ten, Worst 4 lineups in the NBA.

I just started looking at the Jazz's 2-player combination +/- on NBA.com (they now have all combos, completely sortable). Strange to see Jefferson-Foye at the bottom at -90 on the season.

Especially considering their strikingly high efficiency.

What does this have to do with the Jazz's completely ineffective starting lineup?

Nothing. It was a side comment in my post which addressed my postulation as to why our starters have the stats that they do (along with the Houston game, maybe). You then attacked it, so I explained my thinking behind it.

As far as the ineffective starting lineup is concerned, I don't know what to tell ya. To me it seems that moving Carroll to the starting lineup is the smart move. However, is it possible that Marvin has a stipulation for starts in his contracts (I admittedly don't know how this works, so I am thinking out loud here). Or, maybe moving Carroll off the bench weakens one of the more stronger aspects of our roster.

I think moving Hayward to the bench was a great move for this roster as presently constituted. I also think that bringing along Burks with back-up PG minutes is truly helping his development, and usefulness to this roster.

The next mulligan ahead of us is Marvin Williams. Dude has been okay defensively, but void of energy on offense. I think Carroll could help this.

This slow-start issue, coupled with the spread of minutes for when Mo and Hayward come back are probably the most pressing issues of the season.

The way I would hope this all plays out is that Watson's minutes get cut down to DNPs. But still: We have Foye and Hayward at the 2, and Marvin and Carroll at the 3. Do we give Marvin DNPs? Do we just cut Tinsley's minutes completely at backup PG and give them all to Burks? Carroll and Hayward are staples of this wing rotation, and Foye is single-handedly keeping our three-point shooting afloat.

All interesting questions, that I have a tough time answering. Glad I am not Ty.

Good job skirting the issue that JEFFERSON AND FOYE, our worst duo, would still be in the starting lineup.

Who they respectively play does need to be considered.

I don't recall ever saying that. I didn't realize Millsap only plays against scrubs.

I never said that. I'm on your side here.

As a side note, do we ever scrimmage in-season? I would assume no but I only asked because if I were Ty, I'd have one team with Favors and Kanter and Al and Paul on the other. I'd want to see just how well our young guys could do against them.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Kanter-Favors-Carroll-Hayward-Burks outplayed Jefferson-Millsap-Marvin-Foye-PG (Mo, Tinsley or Earl).

But Ty shouldn't really base who starts on meaningful stats, his eyes, or scrimmages, all of which show one narrative. Starting the vets simply makes the most sense.

Another indication we shouldn't sign Al. How many stats do we need along with the eye test to confirm this?

I have this really unique way to judge how effective teams are. It is called wins and losses. I know that is bizarre but it works for me. 30 wins at the all star break for this team in not bad. I think we probably should be at 32 wins but stuff happens.

ooh relly i judge them by playoff defense.
and the way this team is playing defense. they will get swept if they ancounter spurs/okc/clippers.
they go out in 5 games if they encounter the rest

If we are consistently awful in the 1st quarter shouldn't it be the coaches job to get players in there to fix that? Or to find a way to get the team to play better at the start? You've been consistent with your Corbin love. But the starts and the failure in the 1st quarter is all on the coaching staff. Our starters suck together and our coach is too ****ing stupid to do something about it.
ronnie brewer would fix the slow starts in a jiffy.
damm harp on brewer all you want about his jump shots.

buit he would consistently get 3-5 quick buckets in the first minutes of the qtr.

aah Ronnie brewer the cure to slow starts

Brewer got a couple of quick buckets because Deron would throw him alley-oops. Our point guards now would be lucky to even carry Deron's luggage.

Wow Gyp. What a dreadful question.

PS: One of the main reasons Burks has been getting spot minutes at the 1 at a consistent rate lately (even when he wasn't playing as well as e is now) was because reports of him decimating the other lines in the pick and roll. According to reports, a player was like "man, why don't you play PG more often", and Ty agreed, and started to implement it.

I think I found it:

Demarre Carroll: A lot of people didn’t never known him to handle the ball, but every day in practice we see him handling the ball and see him breaking down men and now, you know, somebody said one day in practice, “Man, Alec, you need to play the point.” And you know, I think coach heard him and he just decided to put him at the point and you know, now he really can be a true point guard at 6’6″, and that just make him more valuable.
