What's new

5 year old shoots and kills 7 year old brother at home by accident... In USA of course.

You guys need more good folks like this guy. One gun less at the time is all it takes. If Government would buy out those guns it would go so much faster.

You don't think that making guns immediately illegal and subject to aggressive prosecution would decrease gun availability? Even if a black market survives and thrives and people decide to start making their own, the fact remains that gun availability is going to decrease... massively so. The black market and local mom and pop shops couldn't hope to match the current commercial production level, and the demand for firearms is going to dry up significantly. Why wouldn't it? People, as a general rule, like to avoid fines/going to prison.

It's not like this hasn't been tried before. People keep looking at Chicago? Why not the multitude of countries across the world that have successfully and effectively decreased the level of deadly violence within their borders simply by not having them around. go try living in a foreign country sometime. The U.S., if we're being honest, is kinda sucky in a lot of ways.

You ain't need to look internationally... Even as just a city, Chicago doesn't have the strictest gun laws in the country. Nor does Illinois have the highest deaths per 100k citizens.

But hell if you can get people to listen to that.

No, I don't. I think it will lead to civil war.

I have lived outside the country and I agree there are tons of areas the US can improve. Lots and lots.

But here is how I see immediate gun illegality and aggressive prosecution to play out.

Many citizens (millions) will refuse to register their weapons. Then as they are slowly found many local LEOs will refuse to confiscate and prosecute. Military wont work as that is martial law and if that is declared many soldiers and units will desert/defect. You'd have a wide section of the US from the mountain west, through the great plains, into Texas and the "south" that are the strongest areas of opposition.

I am straight up telling you that it will lead to wide spread rebellion, fighting and civil war.

Meh, seems worth a shot.

Stoked I grew up in Utah and have lived in Texas for a decade. I think you are going to down a likely path. Texas already thinks of itself as a nation within a nation.

I don't really understand the desire for guns (although I kind of understand the fun of creating a massive custom rifle and shooting at inanimate objects) and why some people feel the need to build up an arsenal. The incidences of children getting killed in gun accidents is probably heavily concentrated to households with stupid people who live chaotic lives getting their hands on guns. If people below the 75th IQ percentile who have not committed crimes more than a speeding ticket were forbidden from having guns, the accidents involving children would probably go down by more than 99%.

That all said, there's a constitutional amendment on this and the Supreme Court has already ruled that the government can't just simply ban firearms. We can also repeal an amendment just like our country repealed prohibition. Given how various factions (well, one in particular more than the other) have felt justified in setting aside First Amendment Freedom of Speech, Fourth Amendment No Unlawful Searches and Seizures and Fifth and Fourteenth Due Process rights whenever they feel the circumstances call for it (i.e. if a law or legal process punishes the other tribe, then they're all for it), I'd like for this to be done the proper way. If people think the 2nd amendment is outdated, then repeal it -- don't simply discount it because 18th century men came up with it. These men also came up with Freedom of Speech, Due Process and other fundamental civil rights that were highly restricted throughout the world at that time (still is for a majority of the world's population). The constitution is essentially a document that provides the consent to be governed as long as the government doesn't overstep the bounds that are contained within that document.
