A Bit of Perspective

Folks,

Let's get a bit of perspective here on this series. First off, the Warriors have 4 current All Stars. Any one of the them is considered by most of the league to be better than our best player. Second, they have depth. We also have depth, but they have some real quality there. David West was an All Star and he comes off the bench. Livingston is no slouch. Third, they have a style of play that they have developed into an art form. There are many who would say that this is the most stacked team in a decade and there is a decent argument that they are the best team in the last 30 years. At least for today's style of play. If one of their top 4 players go down for the whole season, they still probably win 60 games this year! These guys have won 21 of their last 22 at home.

We are a young, up and coming team. Most of our players are under 25 years old. We are still developing. We are by no means a finished product. This is our first playoffs for most of our youth. This is Quin's second playoff series as a coach. This is our team's second playoff series for a LONG time. We are NOT a finished product.

So, what is this series about? Is it about beating all odds and taking Golden State down and shocking the world? Don't get me wrong, I might give up ol leftynuts for a title. But any realist would recognize that the odds were less than Leicester's championship run last year. So, why even play the games? Why not just pack it up and go home? We did that vs the Spurs 7 years ago... Vacation sounds pretty nice about now, right?

Why not? Because this is about GETTING BETTER! This series is about RESPECT! This series is about DEVELOPMENT as a team. This is about GROWTH!

Last night we saw 1 awful quarter where a juggernaut punched us in the nose. We could have closed up shop and gone home. But the second quarter was us taking the hit and getting back up in spite of all of the odds and playing them. No matter what the attitude of the Warriors or the players they put out on the court, we beat them 2 of the next 3 quarters. It was 89 - 82 final score for 3 quarters. We lost the 4th quarter by 1 point. We didn't do that in the first game. We just bowed down.

GROWTH! We got better last night. These games and minutes will earn us more respect with refs. These games and minutes will earn our team experience that will pay off throughout next season. These games are huge for our development. These games are being watched by free agents that want to be a part of a TEAM and not just stand by watching Westbrook do everything. This is about league wide respect. Even if we get swept, we are not getting beat four games in a row, it's not like we got wiped off the floor like we did by the Spurs. Last night alone was better than that experience.

So, I for one, am loving the attitude of Quin and the boys as we grow and get better every game! Go Jazz! Supporting through thick and thin, fat and floppy, perky and plump, and everywhere in between! Bra out...

It offends me.

This series is about trying to win. Talking about moral victories when the series isnt over yet, I just dont like it.

There's a deeper issue at work here. The hype machine has never been as important a factor in determining the outcome of basketball games as it is right now. LeBron, Durant, Westbrook, this whole Warriors team...they're simply not nearly as good(relative to the rest of the league). They're all product of an incredible hype machine that didn't exist as recently as 20 years ago. And like any humans, other NBA players buy into it as well. And if you believe you can't beat someone, then you can't beat someone. Most NBA stars today are a good percentage hype. They're not that good, but the league needs to sell jerseys, tickets, TV contracts.

I would argue that the hype alone and the fact that other players buy into it(how can you not when you get bombarded with it on conscious and subconscious levels) is worth 5-10 points a game to any team LeBron plays on. Opposing players are just too much in awe of him because everyone tells them to be.

Everyone and their mum has been telling the Jazz players they can't touch the Warriors for the past week. Everyone and their mum has also been telling them for the past two years that the players they have are some sort of demi-gods whom us mortals had never seen assembled like that before. Do we, as Jazz fans, really need to be doing the same thing?

I guess I don't see growth as a moral victory. Sure, it comes from being punched in the throat and getting back up, which I guess is a moral victory. But growth...that's measurable. Growth comes from things that take toughness and heart -- like not packing up our tent and going home (mentally or by lack of effort) after a bad 1st quarter against a stacked team. Having toughness and heart may be moral victories, but they're also key elements of winning teams. Teams that come to compete. Teams that get knocked down twice and get up the third time. Teams that are making an effort to learn from their mistakes and get better...so they can grow.

If toughness and heart are moral victories, then they're the kind of moral victories lead to real ones.

So you think Klay is better than Hayward ... I think only as a shooter. Is Green better than Rudy? Hard to say, but not for long. And Rudy is playing hurt -- I have a feeling that Green will be too, in the upcoming games, as he was injured last game. We need to stop thinking that they are unbeatable because if we do, we can never win.
