A Good Word on Cotton

I think you are putting too much stock in rumors. It seems to me that Cotton has a greater chance of making the roster now that Dante is injured, not less. Your impressions of this whole situation are so different from mine, but soon we will see what actually happens. And as for the writer you linked to being looked on with disdain, as far as I know that is a Cy thing. If you haven't already noticed, Cy looks on most of the world with disdain so who cares about that?
Rodney Hood went to Mississippi State before Duke and was a teammate of Dee Bost who was in the Jazz training camp last fall.

I'm so glad we have cotton, he will be the best pg ever.

Cotton is the highlighted material of my spotlights for this upcoming early season for sure. I think he will have problems scoring after a while since he is attack 1st type and he can be considered undersized even for PG spot. But he has the hops, wrist and enthusiast for the game which I am looking forward to watch.

Because you mentioned Mississippi State I assume you are trying to explain why Cy does not like Ben Dowset. How this explains that is a mystery to me, but if that is not what you are trying to explain then I find your comment even more confusing. Did you attach it to the wrong post?

Wrist? Is that slang for shooters touch?

My take is that Cotton makes the roster because Quin likes him.

Why does Quin like him? Trey should take note (he pushes the ball up the court; he plays very hard on defense if undersized). He also can make shots, though he has a tendency which Trey exhibits to an even greater degree to dribble too much and take too many bad shots, which results in a poor percentage.

I mentioned it because it was mentioned earlier in the post.

Well, before Dante's injury, I would have put his chances of making the roster at 7 in 10, maybe 8 in 10. Since Dante's injury, it seems more like 3 in 10.
Just the opposite, IMO. Jazz usually carry three PG's. Had Dante NOT been injured, those three would have been Exum, Burke and Neto. Now they'll likely carry 4, with Exum missing the entire season or at least most of it. Cotton will have a chance to impress.

Is there some sort of backlash against Cotton I'm unaware of? I love him as a 3rd PG and I think he has the potential to be a decent backup PG in this league, or at the very least a good sparkplug when the rest of the team doesn't have any energy that night (something that I might value more than other people...I seem to think energy and chemistry is more important than those who think talent alone is the best thing to have).

I don't know. Most fans on this board are supremely single minded and when they've decided to support one player it's usually against other players. I want all of our PG's to succeed and if they ALL turn out to be starters, then so be it. I like Cotton, I like his attitude coming off the bench and if he can turn into a regular rotation player, I am good with that.

"He seems to be firmly behind both Trey Burke and Raul Neto on Utah’s depth chart according to most observers"

People have observed Raul Neto? This opener, smh...

Well, I did read on another forum that someone observed Raul in a Walmart. Probably looked pretty smooth maneuvering that shopping cart.

I'll bet there are 5-10 people on Jazzfanz who could write better articles than most of what is posted on SC Hoops or any other Jazz site.

I admit I am more likely to "see thru a glass darkly". Maybe see the glass half empty rather then half full. I sat down after I started this thread yesterday and tried to figure out why to sign a vet and let Cotton go, and why not to. I gave up after awhile. But, yeah, I was putting a lot of stock in rumors, because 4 guards have, in their turns, been tied by writers to the Jazz. It did feel like the "handwriting on the wall" so to speak.

If they never expressed any interest in looking for a vet to replace Exum for one year, it's a given that Cotton's chances improve, not grow worse. I can't argue with that at all.

replacing young talent with rent a vets is a thing of the past (for the jazz i hope)!!

There is that. I don't think they want to let him go. I don't believe that's the case. And I don't think he'll play himself off the team in camp.
It's good to see you talking yourself off the ledge. I loved your demeanor when you joined this site. Unlike many fans who follow their chosen player to the team, you seemed to have a clear perspective that this is not about your guy. Cotton can succeed here if he figures out how to integrate his talents into the whole, not if he is determined to stand out by doing his own thing. He strikes me as a guy who has a ton of talent, a good head and a lot of heart, but he also has some stuff to overcome (especially size). I think he's in a great environment to prove whether he can do that, and I hope he succeeds. I haven't heard a single word come from management that leads me to believe they think otherwise. Who cares what idiotic ideas (or even what great ideas) that writers or fans discuss. Until the front office acts (or at the very least, gets discovered to be pursuing something) it is pointless to react.

The bottom line is that if Cotton performs well I guarantee he'll be embraced. The small sample size we've seen so far is not nearly enough to set minds at ease because we've seen many flashes in the pan, but if he backs up his end-of-year performance with equally solid work this season he's going to have a job for a long time to come.

Exactly, Joe. When I joined the site, I knew the obvious. It's Jazzfanz, not Cottonfanz. On top of recognizing one should stay realistic and always be a team player, it did not take long to see this was exactly what I would have hoped for, in terms of "if there were one team....". That video I saw early on, the one where they documented a road trip, really made me sit up and take notice of the coaching staff. I'm sure the preparation would be similar and as focused with any professional group, but I could not help be impressed with Snyder, and the whole package of what I saw there. Seeing the regulars at SL, and the stands full, only confirmed my original impression. Namely, if I want to see the guy get what he deserves, what better place then with this team and this coach? And about "what he deserves". I follow all the guys that move on to the League from here. His humbleness set him apart from guys who star in their own movie. That's exactly the kind of guy who fits in with a team that has that youthful enthusiasm and know they are part of something that could be special. So a family is always one for all and all for one. So important for the guys on a team to like each other, to be happy where they are, to be anxious to prove something. And to have a coach who knows how to develop players. Who would not want " their guy" to embrace all that? I've always thought he was lucky to land here.

In all honestly, I've never experienced the degree of emotional investment in one of our local products as I have with Cotton. And it's very clear to me that it has everything to do with how he conducts himself, and how he speaks of himself, and how he never puffs himself up, or takes anything for granted. Certainly, you could never expect a player to be hungrier or more determined to have the attitude "failure is simply not an option". All that has seen to it that I want this kid to succeed more then any other I've supported, and whose careers I've enjoyed. From both PC and URI.
