A story about prayer

Out of curiosity, why would atheists do that?

I don't really know. Bitterness over religion's role in society I suppose. I personally don't understand the incredible efforts spent on trivial battles, like those memorial highway crosses.

Wow ...... at the risk of sounding like I'm riding the fence, my thoughts;

Siro - Not bad, whether I agree or not. I supported him 100% in this thread, whether I agree with any of it .. never really felt disrespected (heaven forbid).

Trout - He (like me) is an equal opportunity offender. Rarely misses an opportunity to show superiority. But this is, after all, a bb forum and his posts are mostly just said in jest, like mine. The fact that he took a different stance here should be permissable/understandable. Sometimes we all have that 'aha' moment we wake and get real.

Wes - I love you man, but you just jumped in here and there as it fit your agenda. Forgive me, but stfu.

Darkwing - My bad bro, but it seems you found an op to jump on Trout and find ample support. Do you have a stance here? Or just wanna jump in? Again, no disrespect intended.

Colton - Nice contributions (that's the rep power talking .. No. Your posts were spot on.)

Because I care about more than myself.

But like other people Believe all sorts of different things but They dont talk about it because everyone is entitled to there own I think and In school most of the kids who love telling everyone there atheists are the only ones Who try to start arguments in class Because they are just looking to talk down to us or try and tell us how Wrong we are or how Gullible or whatever And I just dont get it its not that big a deal to You or anyone Else what I believe in

My agenda? I have no agenda you buttnutt. I ****ing love Trout but he's being a complete tool about all this.

You're not getting it. I don't attack religion to hurt other people's feelings. I do it because I think religion is a bad thing. I don't mean bad for me. I mean bad for EVERYONE. Even those who say the only reason they don't go around killing people is their faith. It's bad for those people too. You act like the random categories you chose to respect are somehow morally superior. But how so? I can justify my position on any grounds you wish. Can you justify yours? There was an article on BBC about a rise if child sacrifice in Africa due to re-emergence of old faiths that promise compensation for the sacrifice. Would you have posted a comment complaining about the off-limit subject? Would you have justified those actions as moral? Or is that faith perfectly fine to criticize because you don't interact with any of the adherents.

Dude, I do get it. For the majority of my life I believed exactly what you're saying here. I used to poke fun at my brothers who were wasting their time and money on their church. Things change, man. I also respect you for your thoughts and ideas, as you've clearly done your homework. I'm not looking for you to justify yourself to me, because seriously, I don't care. Let me repeat, I DO NOT CARE. On that same point, I'm not going to try to justify any of my beliefs to you, because I'm sure you don't care either -- AND I probably can't. That's the bitch of faith, ain't it? To me, it sure seemed like you were being a douche. Perhaps it was just me projecting all of the posts of yours over the years where I ended up scratching my head and wondering how/why you would take the time to tear down someone else because of their religion. I think we can all agree that I'm probably the worst person on this board to be having this debate with, since I don't have the education or life experiences to really compare with yours. So, I will bow out and concede, but I'll get you next time. Next time.
I am perfectly comfortable with my morality because it stems from reasons I understand and support. I don't struggle with moral issues because if I turn out to be wrong about something, I have no problem changing my mind.

Oh, and I never burnt any magic underwear or anything like that. I've been in numerous heated arguments with all kinds of people. But I never performed the rituals atheists are so fond of.

I know this, and this is why I've lessened my hate for you over the years. I dig your style most of the time, I just need to stay away from topics like this.

Also, Mantooth, bro, shut the **** up.

Tell that to the individuals going door to door with their "good news"

God is not obligated to answer prayers, thats what atheists seem to forget.

God takes God gives.

'Course not, but when you figure that God seemingly would rather help a guy find something to save him an hour of searching than, using the example used earlier, helping children suffering in agony, then doesn't he come off as kind of a dick?

Don't you see, if god didn't cause suffering then there would be no opportunities for people to go and do good works to alleviate it. If nothing else God is certainly capable of sacrificing some of his children for the sake of the rest of them.

So the only people that matter are the people you know. Four gay people (or is it five, and don't know your relative?) are the ones that get to determine for YOU what's offensive or not.
Um, ya? Just because Wanda Sykes told me not to doesn't change the fact that in my neighborhood, schools, and every day life that using the term "Gay" is acceptable. It's not used in a derogatory fashion, so eat a fat one. I only brought up my gay friends because one lives in Cali, the other in LA, one in NB, and the other right here in the SLC.

And you're the one bringing up irony?

At first I was like, "Girl, please. I don't have a superiority complex." Then I read PKM's post...

Fine, life is hard at the top. Guilty.

It's funny because, unlike most people, I fully support that. If you believe something is right and good, how can you just keep it to yourself? Back in the day, I used to invite missionaries in and have little debates. But since now they're just children while I'm all grown up, I just express my lack of interest politely and shut the door.

how/why you would take the time to tear down someone else because of their religion.

This is where I think the biggest problem lies. The point is never to tear down someone else. The point is that one can't truly justify a position solely on the intangible platform of faith. I can't use my irrationalities (which tend to parallel old Native American irrationalities) to claim stakes on something. I can't honestly state that the essence/spirit of my pillow lets me sleep at night without rightly being questioned on it.

Methinks the only reason you brought up your gay friends is to say that you have some. Kind of like, I'm not racist, I have a black friend see! I only use the N word in a nonderogatory fashion! (when they're not around)

/Not serious

I feel bad for the poor Bass turds (that's fish pooh, nazi mods), so I always invite them in for a cold Dew or some food. They are not allowed to talk religion, or I show them the door. If we establish this in the first 5 seconds, the rest of the visit is great.

Must say I'm disappointed that this topic has deteriorated into snide snippets and one-liners, for the most part. I believe we can all co-exist and be respectful of one another .. LDS, evangelicals, muslims, non-believers, etc .. I enjoyed the exchange throughout the day. Good night, God bless .. or whatever you prefer to hear that leads to a good night's rest.
