A trade DL should like: Jarnell Stokes

Stifle Tower

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Miami is looking to dump Stokes to reduce their tax bill, Lindsey traded Stokes to Memphis for a future 2nd, He was picked #35. Offer Miami the #60 pick. Instant value!

Seriously, they're also looking to dump Anderson. Jazz have the cap space to take on both and then waive Anderson, allowing Miami to get under the tax. Heat have no 1st-rounder this year, which I believe means they couldn't trade next year's pick. They're really up a creek in terms of future picks. They can't trade a 1st round pick until 2023 unless they acquire another one somehow (the successive year rule). But how about this idea?

Miami gets the #60 pick in 2016
Jazz gets Stokes, Anderson and the right to swap the GS pick in 2017.

Miami does the trade to get under the tax (that's a HUGE incentive)
Jazz use their cap space (once Atlanta gives the final "no" to Teague for Burke + picks) to move up in next year's draft. In all likelihood, GS will again be one of the top-3 teams in the league. Miami is likely to finish middle-of-the-pack in the EC. Their pick could be in the low 20's (this year it's currently #21, but goes to Philadelphia).

Not sexy, but a way to use assets (in this case, cap space) to get something with absolutely zero risk. If GS falters next year and Miami explodes, then the option doesn't get exercised.

And this is a LAST CASE deal. It's only done if DL doesn't get any other viable trade options, So many teams want TOO much for players, If Atlanta truly insists on Hood or even Burks, you tell them to go pound sand.

IINM, there a quite a few teams over the tax threshold. Jazz, according to the ESPN trade machine have $7.6M in cap room. They COULD offer cap space for draft picks. But I'm sure DL doesn't want any more 2nd's. Maybe give up a 2nd to get a late 1st from a team that wants to dump a higher-priced non-contributor. Or a young prospect. I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen.

Teams that could get completely under the tax using Utah's cap space: Houston, San Antonio, Miami, Chicago

Teams that could significantly reduce their tax using Utah's cap space: Golden State, LA Clippers, OKC, Cleveland

I would think some teams might be motivated to get completely under the tax bill if they can. Others have just resigned themselves to paying the tax (like GS and Cleveland). Philadelphia and Utah are pretty close in terms of available cap space. Portland has $20M to spend!

Disclaimer: over/under for cap and tax totals has been taken from ESPN's trade machine.

All the teams in the first category (bolded) have either young prospects to give (so no pick included) or spare parts to dump (draft pick would come with). Personally, I think a late 1st is more attractive because no team is going to give up a young player they think has all-star potential. But some players develop late (like Demarre) so you never know.

I like the pick swap more than stokes but we should get all the guys we traded back cuz it's kind of fun

Yeah, I'm sure DL would love to acquire a player he obviously didn't care for, isn't good, AND make himself look like a fool.

Looking at possible ways to pick up additional firsts or move up was the real intent. I just led with Stokes' name cuz I thought it would be funny to have him back after the draft day trade.

Obviously, Numberica, the value is moving from 30th to perhaps 20th. Stokes wouldn't be the reason for the trade.

Yeah I was more responding to the folks saying they didn't like Stokes. I would be fine with something like this. I thought it was funny because we just got Green add stokes... who else can we reacquire.

This is a smart post. But I suspect that Portland or Philly, who can also take on that much salary, would do the deal as well. And so then I suspect that the asking price goes down, and some team (either Utah, Portland, or Philly) ends up doing it for 2 2nd round picks.

Thanks, Andy. That's why I made a follow-up post on the teams that were into the tax. Looks like there could be up to 8 tax payers, with 4 of those within range of getting under (tremendous incentive for those teams to do so - if they can). Another couple of teams that are way over could want to just reduce their tax bills a bit. Also, there may be other deals that would need a middle-man to clear cap space (for example, Boston trading for Howard). So if Philly and Portland and Utah all get approached by various teams, there could be a bit of a bidding war for "cap rental." Just depends on how many buyers and how many sellers.

The beauty of the Miami deal would be that they still hang on to their first and it's a deal Utah could jump on. Other teams might rebuff Miami initially since they only have seconds to offer and Philly and Phoenix would have no use for a "swap pick" arrangement.

Again, the better option is for Utah to land Teague or Hill. And perhaps a big like Lauvergne or some 3PT help at the wing. Utah has ZERO use for more 2nd-rounders, though.
